I HAD TO KNOW!!
Recap: 59 years old. No meds except small dose of antidepressant. About 45 pounds overweight from a high of 300 pounds (5’6”) 11 years ago, so Bariatric Surgery in 2015. Reactive hypoglycemia EXACTLY 2 years later. Managed that ok until less than a year ago when I felt DIFFERENT. Worse. Nausea. Vomiting. Suspected it was high blood sugar but wasn’t sure. That was confirmed a week ago at doc when fasting finger poke showed 100 and A1C came back at 6.1.
So today I tested. Ate 3.8 oz of typical American cane sugar dessert after a 16 hour fast and shot from 104 to 194 in 20 minutes. 90 points!
Compare that to the first day I got the Dexcom 7 a week ago (and I know they can be inaccurate but the rise and falls seem legit) when I ate a big bunless burger with mustard and slices of onions, tomato and avocado, and I went from 107 to 124. Only 17 points!
Holy SHIZZLE, do I feel empowered??? And I don’t even feel nauseous so I MUST have been having episodes when I indulged more than this example and shot who knows how high? There were times when it hit and I could do nothing but lower my head and keep my eyes closed. Got stranded in a library for 2 hours after a delivery once, too sick to drive, and still threw up once I got on the road. Probably should’ve been in ER.
I have a message for anyone who says moderation is the way. OH HELL NO IT IS NOT, not once you have damaged your metabolic system as I have with 50+ years of indulgences. Although I’ve done significantly better recently, I am so excited to learn more about this and NOT feel like absolute ass! The key for me mentally and emotionally is the same as that damn cosmetics commercial: I’M WORTH IT! There is NO treat that will fix any stressor or emotional struggle. I deserve to treat myself like a Queen and truly care for and love on myself.
In the 10 minutes I’ve been typing this, CGM now shows 170. So curious if my compensated system will drop me too low. THE RIGHT FOOD CAN FIX THIS! I’ve heard way too many of your T2 success stories to believe anything different. And so many inspiring posts from T1 people who eat to reduce BG swings.
Thank you all, once again, for supporting me and so many others who read this page. The fattyhead pizza pic & CGM showing amazing number after eating is from Autoimmune Odyssey: One Family's Experience . They posted exactly as I was writing this, so perfect timing!!
Addendum: I KNOW what I should be eating (meats, eggs, berries, cruciferous veggies, full fat when I eat dairy) but my first memory is trauma as a toddler when I was feeding myself fistfuls of cereal straight from box. Many difficult years ensued in unhealthy emotional environment. Learning a new way now…never too late!!
Addendum #2: 90 minutes after eating, Dexcom shows 94. Curious if I’m dropping too low. I know with the reactive hypoglycemia, I started feeling the lows almost exactly 2 hours after indulging carbs. I should know in another half hour.
Addendum #3: well over 2 hours since
I started test. I’m at 92. So I haven’t gone too low, no feelings of impending reactive hypoglycemia (maybe since it was only 3.8 ounces I ate??)
Addendum #4: no more addendums! I have order to fill and a store to open!!!
