For three million residents in Nassau and Suffolk counties, the invisible boundary between the fresh water in your glass and the salt water of the Atlantic is thinning every day.

Researchers and water managers are increasingly warning that Long Island faces long-term groundwater sustainability challenges due to over-pumping, contamination, and sea-level rise. This is not just an environmental theory; it is a direct threat to one of the region’s most essential natural resources.

Every single drop of water you drink on Long Island comes from a finite, underground “sponge” that is currently under siege. As a Long Islander, after all, you don’t have the luxury of a backup reservoir or a mountain stream. If the water beneath your feet becomes salinized or polluted, commun...

Is Long Island water really safe to drink?

As we move through 2026, many of Long Island’s water providers continue to report that local tap water “meets or exceeds all federal and state standards.” While this statement is technically accurate, it doesn’t always tell the full story about Long Island water quality.

Regulatory standards define what is legally acceptable in drinking water, but they don’t always reflect what many residents consider truly clean or pure. As awareness of PFAS, nitrates, and other contaminants in Long Island groundwater continues to grow, more homeowners are taking a closer look at what’s actually coming out of their taps.

For years, Long Island residents have been told their tap water is “safe.” But growing scientific evidence suggests that PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” may pose serious long-term health risks, including an increased risk of certain cancers.

Over a million people on Long Island are currently consuming water with PFAS levels exceeding the EPA’s recommended health advisory standards.

While Long Island water is naturally “hard” year-round, often containing high levels of calcium and magnesium, the negative effects of that hardness are amplified during winter. If you’ve been debating an upgrade, there is no better time than right now.

Here are three reasons why installing a water softener is your best defense against the harsh winter season. More in our latest blog:

The holiday decorations are up, the heat is cranking, and the heavy coats are officially out of storage. Winter has settled into Long Island, bringing familiar seasonal struggles: dry air, frigid mornings, and spiking utility bills.

Is there a difference in drinking water quality across Long Island?

The short answer is yes, there is a noticeable difference, largely driven by contaminant levels and the infrastructure needed to treat them. While Long Island boasts a stunning natural environment, the quality of the tap water varies significantly depending on where you live, especially East versus West.

And indeed, water quality can, in fact, vary from town to town.

Living on Long Island means being particularly mindful of our water quality. Long Island’s unique geography, with its sandy soil and reliance on a sole-source aquifer, makes the drinking water susceptible to a range of contaminants, from industrial byproducts like 1,4-dioxane to agricultural runoff.

Many residents turn to water filters for peace of mind. You’ve seen them on store shelves: pitchers, faucet attachments, and whole-house systems, all promising to deliver pure, clean water. But with so many options making bold claims, how can you be sure a filter actually does what it says?

The answer lies in a small but powerful symbol: a certification seal. More in our latest blog: https://simplypurli.com/why-certified-water-filters-are-a-must-for-your-long-island-home/

When it comes to Long Island’s drinking water, nitrates are a year-round concern, but they’re especially problematic during the coming winter months.

Groundwater aquifers, the sole source of drinking water for Nassau and Suffolk Counties, are increasingly contaminated by nitrates originating from various sources, including cesspools, septic systems, fertilizers, and airborne pollutants.
