I sent 37 goats to the sale this morning. I am out of pasture space, and had to make some hard decision. 8 does went. It seems like everyone in the pasture is crying, and makes me feel like crying, too! How do we get so attached to the furry monsters?! This beautiful belted doe went. It's my daughter's goat. She lost her kids this year, and proceeded to co-parent this set of twins. Much to their mother's disgust...

Family units are important. We all know that. But I still enjoy it every time I see a family line I like. The darkest doe is Quad Mama. She's had, and raised, quads every year until this year. The severe drought we had last fall, coupled with an earlier than usual breeding season, meant we had a lot of singles born this year. Even the indomitable Quad Mama produced a mere set of triplets! This picture show her, her two month old triplets, her yearling quad doeling on the right, and her 3 year old quad daughter (who has twins this year) on the far left.

I breed to kid in March to avoid our frequent Jan/Feb blizzards. This year we had a ONE DAY jail break when a buck released himself (at least, that's the way my boys say it MUST have happened) five months ago. It must have been a busy day, because these are the photos of the pasture my daughter was texting me while I was at work yesterday...

I've had to sell several does this spring due to a shortage of pasture fenced for goats. I cam out early on sale day and found this pretty doeling loaded on the trailer by my hubby. Now, he's not really big on the goat project, but he has been wonderful about feeding them for me this year since I've gone back to work in town. Normally, he doesn't make goat decisions. When I saw she'd been added to the load, I panicked. "Not Trouble! Why is she in there?!" (I am not good with names. I'm an accountant. My goats have affectionate numbers rather than names.) This doeling gets her head stuck in our field fending. Every. Single. Day. Sometimes twice a day. She's the only one. Hubby was tired of dealing with her. He's afraid she'll hang herself or starve. Very valid. The same tendency did earn another doe her trip to town last month. But THIS doeling is my only daughter from Quad Mom! (Again, really not good with names. Quad mom has had quadruplets and raised them beautifully for three consecutive years, so... Quad Mom.) "We can't sell the only doeling from Quad Mom!" So, he found a fix. I don't know where he got this harness/halter for her, but Trouble is now anchored to a tire she cannot pull. She is across the fence from the herd on our mile long dirt road with no traffic. She has an irrigation ditch of water, and the lgd's are on patrol. Meanwhile, I'm on the waiting list of our local fence master who is going to install goat fencing on a 20 acre pasture for me "When he gets to me." Ranching requires creativity and teamwork. I'm so grateful for my team! And lovely goat genetics! And yes, the new fencing is going to be electric!

When our dairy/kiko doe kidder last year, we milked a couple of GALLONS of colostrum from her besides what her twins drank. I kept thinking there was no way we would need that much goat colostrum any time soon, but I'm a ranch kid and couldn't fathom just dumping it. So here we are, 9 months later. We have a surprise batch of piglets from a first time mom who wants nothing to do with them. Guess what they need? Goat colostrum! Considering that they eat every other hour, and there are 5 of them, they are making good use of the stash. I love my goats! Now excuse me while I go find the escape artist lost somewhere in my house...

Getting the trailer fixed is definitely on the to-do list! No goats in the back of the van this year, but this is the third truck load! One or two loads left to go, but it's a long drive. According to the hands, it's cold out! (No, the humans didn't ride back there...)
