What are we crop pairing in our gardens?
One of our favorites is one of the most common: marigolds! We like to keep them next to our peppers and our pumpkins to maximize pollination. Bonus: our chickens love to eat the flowers, so we dedicated a whole raised bed to them 🐓
Another favorite: nasturtium! Here in the PNW it feels like aphids absolutely THRIVE, so we are pairing them with our roses and our corn to act as a trap crop. We even threw some into the marigold bed because the flowers not only attract aphids, they are just so pretty 😍

Is your flock ready for the 4th of July? 🎆
While we love the fireworks, our feathered friends often don't! The loud noises and bright flashes can be incredibly stressful for chickens, leading to panic, injuries, and even health issues.
Here are some tips to help keep your chickens safe and calm this Independence Day:
* Secure the Coop: Make sure your coop is extra secure. Chickens can panic and try to escape, or even injure themselves on fences. Double-check all latches and ensure there are no gaps.
* Provide a Safe Haven: If possible, consider moving your chickens to a more sheltered or soundproof area (like a garage or shed) during peak fireworks times.
* Minimize Light: Cover windows in the coop to block out flashing lights. Darkness can help them feel more secure.
* Extra Comfort & Distraction:
* Treats! Offer some special treats or a hanging cabbage to keep them occupied and distracted.
* Hydration is Key: Ensure they have plenty of fresh water. Stress can increase their water intake.
* Monitor Your Flock: Check on your chickens frequently throughout the evening and after the fireworks have ended to ensure everyone is calm and accounted for.
* Post-Fireworks Check: The next morning, do a thorough check of your coop and run for any signs of damage or potential hazards from stray fireworks debris.
Let's make sure our chickens have a peaceful and safe 4th of July too! ❤️🐓

Baby Bird in Your Garden? Here’s what to do!
If you find a fledgling (a newly feathered baby bird learning to fly) sitting in your garden, it’s so tempting to help. However usually, the best thing to do is leave it be! Its parents are likely nearby, still feeding and watching it.
Unless it's in immediate danger, like in the road or near predators (ie cats), give it space. If you do need to move it, gently place it in a safe, higher spot like a bush nearby and within chirping range so its parents can still find it.
Let's let these little ones learn to fly naturally! 🐦

Upcycling is a great sustainability practice that helps reduce waste and gets those creative juices flowing!
We put a lot of effort into attracting pollinators to our garden, so we wanted to give our friends a spot to drink.
The solution? A large, shallow dish and a heavy vase put together with construction glue!
We didn’t have anything that would work already, but a quick trip to a thrift store and less than $20 brought us this beauty

Have some skittish chicks? Here are some tips that can help:
Most people want to pick up their chicks from the top (Think claw machine). Instead, try coming from the side and scoop them from the bottom.
Let them come to you and step onto your hand themselves (patience is vital). Chicks are naturally inquisitive and will come investigate, especially if you have something shiny!
Do you like having your arms pinned? Neither do they! Refrain from holding down their wings and let them just sit in your hand.
Treats are always a crowd pleaser! (Only if your chicks have access to grit)
Letting your chicks gain confidence that you aren’t just some scary thing from the sky is key to having chicks that are friendly additions to your family!

A fun little post for your Sunday!

Think You Know Chickens? Think Again.
Forget the simple farm animal stereotype. Chickens are far more fascinating than you might imagine.
* Dino DNA: Their closest living relative is the mighty T-rex.
* Surprisingly Smart: Chickens are intelligent creatures that can recognize up to 100 different faces.
* They Talk: With over 30 distinct calls, they even chirp to their chicks before they hatch.
* Sweet Dreams: Like humans, chickens experience REM sleep, which means they likely dream.
* A Colorful World: Beyond brown and white, chicken eggs can naturally be blue, green, and even chocolate brown.

Feeling the heat? So are your chickens! 🐔☀️
Chickens can't sweat, so hot weather can be dangerous for them. Keep a close eye on your flock as temperatures rise.
Watch for signs of heat stress:
* Heavy panting or holding their mouths open.
* Spreading their wings out from their bodies.
* Lethargy and sluggishness.
* A pale comb and wattles.
Easy ways to help them beat the heat:
* SHADE is essential. Make sure they have a cool, shady place to escape the sun.
* Provide fresh, cool water. Add ice to their waterers and consider putting out extra water stations. A splash of electrolytes can help, too!
* Offer chilled treats. Frozen berries or watermelon are a flock favorite.
* Ensure good coop ventilation. A breezy coop is a cooler coop.
A little extra care can keep your flock happy and healthy through the hottest days of summer!
