Our big shipment of annuals doesn’t come until tomorrow, but here’s a few to start with.
With the late spring, what’s everyone’s thoughts on planting?
Are you anxious to get it done?
Are you hesitant to even think about it because we still could have cold weather?
We will likely not be getting any additional shipments of annuals, so best to shop early. That being said, we have hundreds of flats coming, so we won’t run out on Opening Weekend either. If you see something you like, buy it and wait to plant till after the frost free date to be sure!

On this Earth Day 2022, be like this daffodil and even through the gloom…go ahead and BLOOM!
The nice rain was much appreciated, but now a week of sunshine and warmth is also much needed!
These Brassicas need to get out of the greenhouse and into our fields!

It's a favorite of mine, the bees, and well unfortunately, the bunnies like the foliage when it's new too. 😉
You might not find another perennial with a flower this true blue though!

Another must have spring bloomer that is native to Iowa- Prairie Smoke, Geum triflorum.
It gets its name from the "smoke-like" puffs that burst open from the pink buds. This plant is very flat to the ground, and only gets about 6" tall, so use it in the front of the border.

After they are done blooming, you are left with the cutest little tumble w**d looking seed heads.

Honeysuckle Vines for 2022-
Kintzley's Ghost- so far just what we overwintered from 2021, so order in advance if you want to snag one.
Goldflame- NEW for 2022
Mandarin- tried and true orange flowering type
These are all a woody vine that requires a sturdy support system. They do twine around things, but may need some assistance to grow in the direction you want them to go. They need full sun and average moisture. Loved by the hummingbirds!

Basket of Gold is a champion of spring. It blooms in May and lasts a long time. The silvery gray foliage is tough and this plant will spread about if you don't deadhead it. I let it spread and then move the ones that don't grow where I want them to!
Excellent for rock gardens or the front of the border. This one gives you lots of bang for the buck as it's easily noticed from a distance.
Find it on our plant list in the Full Sun section. https://redgranitefarm.com/perennials/

04/02/2022

It's time to make the cut! The dead foliage of your perennials and ornamental grasses can be cut down to 2-3" anytime now. If you have mulched beds, you can chop it up and leave it around the bed as mulch. Then top dress with a hardwood mulch if you want a neat and tidy look. Make sure you destroy anything that has any foliar leaf problems like mold and mildew.
It's also time to apply your pre-emerge, like Preen, if you want to prevent w**d seeds from germinating.
You can also prune your shrubs- but not the spring blooming ones like Lilacs and Forsythia- wait till after they bloom to prune them! Spirea, Hypericum, and probably some I'm forgetting here- all benefit from a pruning that takes about 1/3 of the plant and shapes them up nicely.
Things that shouldn't be cleaned up yet- Lavender, Basket of Gold, Hellebores, Russian Sage. These things might not need a harsh cut back, so wait to see new growth first.

All of the Itoh's get 30-36" tall and wide. Flowers are mostly single, but with some ruffled texture.
All Itoh Peony are in a 2 gallon pot and are $50 each.

Butterfly Bush is a much requested plant that I've resisted stocking for many years. This year, I am trying a few, but wanted to let everyone know it is a tough plant to grow in some situations. High wind, cold, exposed sites will not work well for this plant. If you live in town and have a protected spot, with lots of sun in the summer, should do great!
They will die back each year, so plan on getting about 4' of growth each season, even though most sources list these as getting 6-8' tall.
First Editions® Funky Fuchsia™ Butterfly Bush
First Editions® Groovy Grape™ Butterfly Bush
If you live where conditions aren't favorable for this plant- go with Anise Hyssop instead. It's my go-to out here on the prairie :)

Here's an annual combo for the shade. I've been doing this combo on my front porch for years now. I always think I'll try something different, but it's so shady, that it's easier to just stick with what works.

Clematis are in short supply this year, but we have them listed on our pricelist for now. Once the season gets going, we will edit the list to be a more accurate listing of what is available. I'm hoping a new overwinter method works, and some of the ones we overwintered actually survive!
