Arcadian Acre

Arcadian Acre A homestead and business "Arcadia" is defined as "a place offering peace and simplicity." Arcadian Acre also is the name of my small business.

That's how I view my one-acre homestead, so that's why I named it "Arcadian Acre." I grow and sell chemical-free vegetables and homemade salves and lip balms.

Arcadian Acre is now officially a WWOOF host! (WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.) This means that we can accept volunteers at our homestead. I'm crossing my fingers that I get some volunteers this year. Growing food and maintaining a large garden, especially through organic methods, is a lot of work. I can use all the help I can get!

Theresa and her husband have been hitting the road - and WWOOF farms - to escape the city and get closer to their food. Learn more about why they think you should, too, by reading their recent article in Darling Magazine. They've even launched a project to share and promote sustainable farming and y...

Last weekend, I sorted through my seed drawer to figure out what seeds I need to order this year. New things I'm growing in 2018 are arugula, escarole, Italian parsley, and nasurtium, which is a flower that serves as a companion plant to keep pests away from vegetables and is edible and offers a beautiful and tasty touch to salads. Does anyone have requests for what I should grow this year?

I'm not sure how I feel about today's weather. Part of me is happy that it is raining because part of our water supply relies on rainwater, which is usually hard to come by in the winter. The other part of me is scared of what will happen once everything freezes. Be careful out there!

One of my New Year's resolutions is to improve my marketing for Arcadian Acre, so I'm going to be posting more pictures and information about what we're up to. 2018 will be an exciting year for us as we plan on expanding our garden so we can reach new customers. But, for now, the garden looks like this. Best wishes to you all in 2018!

This year, in addition to participating in the Old Forge Farmers Market, Arcadian Acre was part of the new Friday Night Farmers Market in Remsen. Remsen is considered a food desert, which means that there is no place in the village to buy fresh veggies and fruit. I'm very pleased that the vegetables I grew were offered at this market and want to give a shout out to my friend, Ash Fletcher, and to her nonprofit, Wholesome Living, for organizing the market and supporting my business. Thank you!

Oh, potatoes! How I love thee! Potatoes are by far my favorite crop, even though they require a lot more work than others I grow. This year I grew Adirondack Blues, Yukon Gold, and Mountain Rose, which I market as red, white, and blue potatoes.

It makes me sad that I can't work in my garden this time of year, but at least I can still enjoy my garden treasures! Pictured here is my snowy backyard and garden and some of the Adirondack Blue and Red Potatoes I grew this past summer.
