Day 11. Woke up at 4am to a sky full of stars, then heading to Lamar Valley to try to catch wildlife in the early hours of the day. Surprising there wasn’t a ton happening but the bison were certainly active. So we headed back to pack up camp at Indian Creek, then made our way down the park exploring all of the geysers on the west side of the park before an early night at Grant Village so we could cook dinner and chill.

Day ten. And this was the stop I’d been most looking forward to (although the scenery has been amazing don’t get me wrong). We drove up to Ulm Montana to spend time at Timeless Seeds, learning about how they’ve built up organic pulse crop farming in the region. If you’re interested in learning about it, there’s a great book called The Lentil Underground written about Timeless and the farmers responsible for making this all happen. I’m hoping this turns into a real partnership moving forward as we work toward the organic certification on top of our sourcing practices, more on that soon. Day eight. Camped in Black Hills National Forest and got a quick hike in before breakfast in Spearfish. Pitched Good Earth Natural Foods on Prest while we waited for food because it was a busy day. Then made our way to Devils Tower and then through the Bighorns on our way to Cody where we camped for the night. Glad we didn’t end up doing the trip in an old camper van because these hills were unforgiving!

Day seven. Badlands National Park, lots of prairie dogs, stopped by Wall Drug and then off to Mount Rushmore to see the fathers. Found a cool spot on federal land in the Black Hills to camp for the night. Lots of driving and cool views on this one!

Day six. The Minnesota State Fair lives up to being the best in the country, SO cool! They had incredible art made out of leftover beans and seeds, delicious roasted corn, and the biggest pumpkins you could dream of. Then made our way to Sioux Falls and checked out Look’s Marketplace where Prest is on the shelves. Feels so cool seeing it in the wild. Finished the day with some live music and checking out the falls at sunset.

Day Four. Checked out Madison, then explored the Epic Systems corporate campus which is basically like Disneyland in the rolling hills of Wisconsin. Then hit up Glarus Brewing for a sampling of Wisconsin-only beers and spent the rest of the day exploring Wisconsin cheese country making questionable decisions about how much cheese our stomachs could handle.

Day three. Coffee and breakfast in Dearborn was insane, the food scene here is so good. New Yasmeen Bakery might make some of the best hummus I’ve had in the US. Stopped for a swim in Lake Michigan at Warren Dunes State Park and made some hummus on the beach…also burned the bottom of my feet walking up the dunes, wear shoes if you go lol, don’t be me. Ended the day in Lake Geneva Wisconsin where we camped for the night after having a delicious dinner and listening to some live music at House of Bogini. Perfect day.
