Meet Jamie and Josh Rose, third-generation owners of Green Mountain Sugar House!

Their love story begins in Antarctica, where Jamie was fueling airplanes and Josh was a carpenter (presumably the wood was imported 😂).

They took over this institution last year from Josh’s parents, and have their kids helping tap trees in the woods to make maple syrup.

Green Mountain Sugar House has a great gift shop and makes creemees on-site using their own maple syrup. 🍁

Yared is a young man from Ripton (shoutout Addison County) who now co-owns a coffee and lunch spot in the heart of Cambridge MA: The Smoot Standard. ☕️

Oliver Smoot was a frat pledge at MIT who laid down across the Harvard Bridge repeatedly to measure the bridge length in his height (5’7”). The bridge is 364.4 smoots long. Yared’s cafe is named in honor of him. 🌉

Yared and I met ~15 years ago while both living in Middlebury. I tutored one of his best friends from high school. He recognized me when I popped by his spot with a friend to have some coffee. 👨🏻‍🐰‍👨🏾

A lovely coincidence and perfect evidence of Vermont’s culinary reach beyond the borders of our little state. Support Yared if you make it to Cambridge!

It’s finally farm season!

That long cold winter is breaking and CSA’s are opened up (in fact, I’m very late shouting them out). Sweetland Farm in Norwich is one such opportunity. You can sign up late and they’ll pro-rate you. 🥬

A couple benefits of a CSA:

🥦 Direct support of local farmers.
🍅 Delicious, fresh vegetables and fruits grown by someone you know.
🍆 A great excuse to visit the farm and be CLOSE TO THE ROOT

Fun fact: Norah and I learned farming (her much more than me) from the same wonderful woman, the beloved Margie Levine, while students at The Putney School. 🌳

Open to public: their great farm shop, open 365 days a year!
