This month's #NextGenBeekeeper is someone who joined Best Bees as an intern, quickly fell in love with beekeeping, and is now our Regional Coordinator West! We chatted with Sam about her early days at Best Bees, how beekeeping on the West coast is different from the East (especially during the wild fires), and what she's up to in her free time. We're so proud to have you on our team, Sam! Check out her story here: https://bit.ly/2FJVlRE

🌱Local, Green, and Fair Snapshot: The Best Bees Company

••••••••••••••••••••••
What’s all of the buzz about local businesses, you may ask? As integral components of the community that they serve, their sourcing and hiring practices can contribute to the local economy in an effort to sustain the community’s growth and development. As part of SBN’s Snapshot Campaign, we want to highlight local businesses and their efforts for strengthening local economies. We want to reveal that hard work does not go unnoticed among our SBN members and that their work is appreciated within the greater Boston community.

To truly understand the buzz of local businesses, we’ll take a look at The Best Bees Company, an all-inclusive beekeeping service. Spanning twelve different major metropolitan cities across the country, Best Bees installs and maintains bee hives for both corporate and home beekeeping. The Boston-based company was founded in 2010 by Noah Wilson-Rich, with the goal to understand what is affecting bees negatively in order to improve bee health.

We loved creating these custom honey labels for our clients at LongFellow Real Estate Partners to help highlight their amenity program, Elevate by Longfellow. 🍯

What's one thing we love even more than this little jar of pure honey? 👉 The fact that clients like this are making a conscious effort to make an impact and be part of something bigger.

How are you making a positive impact on our environment?

Harvest Your Own Honey!

Yes, you can do it yourself! It's a little sticky, but fun and so worth it. Save these steps below for your next honey harvest!

HOW TO HARVEST YOUR OWN HONEY 👇

Supplies You'll Need
▫️ Large sheet pan
▫️ Cheesecloth or other strainer
▫️ Bucket or large bowl
▫️ Large spoon, fork, or knife
▫️ Funnel
▫️ Glass jars

👉 STEP ONE
Take the honeycomb to an enclosed room. If you try to harvest it outside, bees, wasps, or hornets will be attracted to the scent and could begin to gather!

👉 STEP TWO
Move the honey into the strainer by supporting the frame over the strainer, and using a spoon or knife to scrape the honey out! You will notice this solid but thin layer of wax once your spoon goes into the comb about half an inch. This style is beneficial because it doesn’t damage the foundation, so the frame can be re-used.

Once you have a mixture of honey and wax, let gravity do its job! It may take overnight for it to pull the honey down through the strainer and into the bucket, leaving just the wax in the strainer. Feel free to stir the mixture occasionally and place it in a warm area will help to speed up the process.

👉 STEP THREE
Time to package your honey! Make sure you sterilize your containers by washing the jars with hot, soapy water, and rinse then dry COMPLETELY. If honey is exposed to water or contaminants, it may ferment over time.

Spoon the honey into your prepared containers and close the jars or bottles with airtight lids to preserve the honey, and monitor your jars for a few days to remove any debris that may rise to the surface. You can also use a funnel or a honey draining bucket, like we did!

👉 WRAP UP / FINALIZE
Don't forget the wax! You can keep the leftover wax to make candles, lip balm, or other products. 🕯️ The extracted frames can be stored for re-use, however if they are left outside they will attract bees.

Lastly...enjoy! Honey from the comb will keep forever, if stored correctly.

What can our clients' hives tell us about the future of honeybee health? We are testing the effectiveness of Hive Alive, a mixture of kelp extracts and essential oils, to test if we can fight Nosema (a fungal infection that infects the gut of honeybees and the overall productivity of hives 👎).

We first introduced this study in 2017 by looking at two beehives in the same environment, and are now taking it to the next level by selecting a group of 30 beehives across MA, RI, and Southern NH. We can't wait to see how this will help improve and inform our practices, as well as provide further insight for the beekeeping community!

Can urban beekeeping really save the bees? You probably know our answer. 😉 Thank you, NowThis and Lucy Biggers for featuring Best Bees' Co-Founder Noah Wilson-Rich (and our friends at Detroit Hives!) to talk about how bees are thriving in cities.

Crucial bee populations are being threatened by habitat loss, chemical pesticides, and disease — but thanks to urban beekeeping, not all hope is lost 🐝

Honey harvesting is one of our very favorite times of the year, because that's when our clients get to taste the fruits of their beehives' reverent labor! That's right—when you beekeep with us, you get to hold on to 100% of the raw honey that's produced, and we take care of the rest, like small batch extraction and bottling with personalized labels. Why Some Ecologists Worry About Rooftop Honey Bee Programs

Honored to be featured in this WIRED article addressing an important and complex issue. Saving the bees means saving native pollinators too, so we always maintain urban beehives responsibly.

To us, this means diligently tracking the health of each hive, measuring the local biodiversity (through innovations like HoneyDNA), and supporting conditions that will benefit the entire ecosystem. Thank you to the reporter Ms. Ball for her nuanced approach to the topic!

Urban beekeeping has given some scientists pause. They wonder if these efforts are really helping to save the bees—especially native species.

#nationalhoneymonth ~ let’s talk about the science of honey! Since 2016, we have been compiling an impressive list of plants that feed honeybees through the analysis of DNA found in our favorite golden liquid. The possibilities to apply this science are endless— from planting for pollinators to better understanding climate change.
.
Through our honeyDNA research, we are able to identify the presence of plant species in a location before and after a natural disaster, thus informing restoration efforts. With the climate crisis more visible than ever before, the need to continue these research efforts is pressing.

09/03/2020

Best Bees is located off of Melnea Cass Blvd, a street named after Boston civil rights leader who fought for racial justice in our city. This street is home to 600 mature trees that bring life to the boulevard- providing the community with shade and shelter and providing the environment with cool and clean air. These trees also feed the city’s pollinators— thousands of which live less than a mile away at our headquarters.
.

And yet, the city is planning to remove a bulk of them. To do so would exhibit extreme irresponsibility amidst a climate emergency. As demonstrated by Climate Ready Boston, the neighborhood is an urban heat island and climate change will exacerbate these conditions. Plus, as our commuting staff and Boston cyclist union have pointed out, the reconstruction of the Melnea Cass bike lane is not necessary or worth the loss of these beloved and integral trees.

Attention all beekeepers! Pollinator Partnership is kicking off Mite-A-Thon a tri-national effort to collect mite infestation data and to visualize Varroa infestations in honey bee colonies across North America! This effort will span across two weeks [08/15 - 08/30] in an effort to reveal the levels of Varroa mites in beehives across the US, Canada, and Mexico. I love that your organization is so committed to bee health and environmental sustainability. I think it is so important to protect the planet and every creature it holds, which is why I have been trying to support content like yours that is sharing a valuable message. In my search for more content like this, I found the official Youtube trailer for a new documentary called “Kiss the Ground” that offers a solution to climate change: regenerative agriculture. The trailer shows farmers who allow animals and pollinators to practice their natural living patterns, which benefits the animals, the crops, and the planet as a whole. I think the way your organization protects bee health is a great example of the ways natural agriculture only serves to benefit the Earth. The directors, Josh and Rebecca Tickell, promote the same ideals, which is why I am so excited to show my support for their project by attending the virtual watch party and Q&A when it is released to Netflix on September 22nd (only 8 days away)! Let me know what you think!
There are more than thousand saved bee colonies already. I want to share with You information about the work carried out by a group of enthusiasts from Ukraine concerning searching funds for protecting honeybees from pesticides poisoning.
