Healthy Food for Boston Schools Action Network

Healthy Food for Boston Schools Action Network These calorie dense and nutritive poor foods do not promote learning, academic success, nor the long term health of our children.

We call on BPS to make continued changes toward a plan that serves the freshest, healthiest, nutrient-rich foods possible to the 54,000 BPS students it serves each day! The Healthy Food for Boston Schools Action Network is a collaborative of parents, educators, organizations, health professionals, politicians and concerned citizens. Our group emerged with a clear mission when BPS parents, school s

taff and organizations were startled to learn of major menu changes in the BPS meals program that began April 1st, 2015. School meals were "streamlined" to options that are largely limited to more processed fast foods such as nuggets, burgers, steak and cheese subs, mac and cheese and pizza. These changes shed light on the poor quality of food being served to our children at every school within BPS. We call on BPS to explore alternatives that would value our students, staff, and support healthy growth, academic success and food equality across the district while being financially viable and sustainable.

Here is a link to the film documenting the process of getting the hub and spoke model into BPS. It highlights many attitudes and barriers we faced in addressing ANY issues with the Food and Nutrition Service department. Truly frustrating. And interesting watch. It ends with some questions only the Mayor's office will be able to answer. Catch it if you can!
