A dairy heritage museum focusing on the dairy industry in Montgomery County, MD. began planning for a fully operational museum.
The Founding of the MOOseum and it's Organization
In the late 1960’s the James & Macie King Farm was sold to the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) with the understanding that it would become the centerpiece of a proposed regional park in an area of the county that was anticipating commercial and residential development. Thirty-five years later, South Germantown Recrea
tional Park became a reality, with the King Barn the only building on the site preserved by the County. Through the efforts of the Farm’s family and friends of agriculture throughout the County a core group of organizers of the museum was developed. The Montgomery County Planning Board gave it’s unanimous approval for the MOOseum project in April, 2002. Once the site was defined and the original building restored, the Barn was made available by MNCPPC through a right of entry agreement, the King Barn Dairy Mooseum, Inc. Federal 501-C(3) (non-profit) designation was received in June of 2003, and the MOOseum has been a Registered Charity in the State of Maryland since May 2004.
The families that arranged to visit the MOOseum had a fabulous time with our docents! Send a message to us from the bottom of our home page on our website: King Barn Dairy Mooseum | Hertiage Museum Maryland to arrange your own group visit.

The MOOseum was thrilled to have District 2 MoCo Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe as one of our 142 visitors to the King Barn Saturday, July 22nd - the first day of Farm Tour Weekend. The MOO is open Sunday July 23rd from 1 - 4 pm for the second day of Farm Tour Weekend and hope to see a good crowd that day as well.
What do schools do if they want to take their students on a field trip to the MOOseum but they don't have enough car seats? They schedule MOO to YOU to come to their students. The MOO docents happily presented to students from two Montessori schools last week. A good time was had by all!
Happy 4th of July!

The MOOseum opened the 2023 season with a new exhibit - the cow ruminant exhibit. This exhibit explains how the cow digestive system works and how a cow makes milk. Come visit on Saturdays, 10 am - 3 pm, or the 4th Sunday, 1 pm - 4 pm, to learn more about this fascinating subject.
Although at first disappointed to find the MOOseum does not have a real cow, the students quickly become excited "milking" this model cow and learning the steps in milking a cow
Engineer Dennis loves to explain to visiting students why there is a train in this dairy barn. Come visit the MOOseum on Saturdays, 10 am - 3 pm. or the 4th Sunday of the month, 1 pm - 4 pm, to find out yourself!
Another school visit. For larger classes, an extra center is added to the standard 6 - a walking tour down the King farm road and learning about Helen King, born on this farm in 1915. The docent works with the kids to compare and contrast Helen's life - no electric! - to their lives, over 100 years later. This group were lucky to have Helen's son, Farmer Bill, giving the tour that day."
Just before the students go on their barn tour, their chaperones take a picture of the group by the cow made for the MOOseum by a supporter. The picture is a wonderful memory of their trip to the former dairy farm
MOOseum docents getting ready to greet the visiting school kids at the King Barn. Each student experiences 6 centers - a barn tour, making a dairy-themed craft to take home, "milking" a modle cow. learning about the transportation of milk, making butter and seeing a film on dairy farming today. Makes for a great day for the kids, their chaperones, and the MOO docents!
May the Fourth Be With You!
MOOseum docents are thrilled that May is here and school visits have started again! Children churn butter in one of the 6 centers on their field trip to the King Barn Dairy MOOseum. A docent gets the cups of heavy whipping cream ready in the hours before the visit so all the children can make their butter in a timely manner.
The MOOseum is now scheduling camp visits for the summer and is open free to the public on Saturdays from 10 am - 3 pm, and the 4th Sunday of the month from 1 pm - 4 pm, from now until the end of October.
Hope to see you there soon!
