Work smarter, not harder I suppose.

Cover crops are an essential tool, even in the smallest backyard garden.

One of my favorites is buckwheat. We sow it between spring and fall crops because it’s fast, beautiful, and supports soil health. In about 30 days, it’s ready to terminate. Instead of tilling it in, I use a simple crimping tool to pinch the stems, stopping the plant and letting it die back naturally while the roots stay in the soil. This tool is simply a piece of angle iron with a rope for a handle.

That one practice creates a ripple effect. The flowers feed pollinators, and afterward the mulch protects the soil, reduces moisture loss, suppresses w**ds, and slowly returns nutrients as it breaks down. The roots also feed soil biology, build organic matter, and improve water and root movement for the next crop.

Cover crops are one way I try to grow more mindfully, supporting soil, wildlife, and long-term productivity.

Every season is a chance to leave the garden better than we found it. Can I do this with the help of cover crops. Be sure to follow and stay in touch as we will be adding several cover crops seeds to our website this winter!

The Brute Broadfork isn’t just for loosening soil, it’s one of the most versatile tools on our farm.

I use it to:
• Lift and aerate beds without disturbing soil structure.
• Mark three straight carrot rows on 8-inch spacing for easy direct seeding.
• Make cultivation simpler and reduce w**d pressure.
• Harvest carrots by sliding the tines between the rows and lifting roots with minimal damage.

If you’re looking for a heavy-duty, all-steel, American-made broadfork built to last, check out the Brute and our full lineup of high-quality farm tools at mindfulfarmer.co.

Every year, I try to beat my own tomato harvest record.

This year’s target? 30 pounds per determinate (bush) tomato plant.

We’re growing heat-setting tomato varieties developed by the University of Florida (Grand Marshall & BHN 589) and so far our little row of just 12 plants is producing 40–50 pounds of tomatoes every week…and we’re only about halfway through the season!

If all goes as planned, I’m aiming for 360 pounds of tomatoes from an 18-foot row.

The secret isn’t luck or a green thumb, it’s starting with the right varieties and building healthy, balanced soil. I started with a soil test, followed the recommendations using Mindful Farmer organic fertilizer, and I’ve watched my yields improve year after year.

If you’d like to grow more tomatoes too, head to our website to grab a soil test, use our free soil test interpretation guide, and check out our selection of organic fertilizers. Healthy soil really does make all the difference!

I haven’t hand-pulled w**ds or grasses from our home garden in years.

The secret isn’t one thing. It’s a system.

We use silage tarps, cover crops, ducks and chickens, but the biggest difference has been staying ahead of w**ds with regular cultivation. That’s why I invented the Razor Cultivator. I wanted one tool with endless uses that could be the last cultivator you’d ever need.

With every new planting, I cultivate once a week for the first four weeks. That takes out every flush of tiny w**ds in the top half inch of soil before they can get established or produce seed. By the time the crop canopy fills in, it shades the soil and does the rest of the work for me.

Not only does that eliminate w**ding for the rest of the season, but every w**d you keep from going to seed means fewer w**ds next year. That’s how you build an easier, more abundant garden over time.

Good systems beat hard work.

You can find our Razor Cultivator at mindfulfarmer.com.

This simple DIY tool is my backyard cover crop crimper. Today I’m using it to terminate a stand of buckwheat, one of my favorite summer cover crops. Instead of tilling, I crimp the stems so the plants die in place and become a natural mulch that helps conserve moisture, suppress w**ds, feed the soil, and slowly release nutrients to the next crop.

Healthy gardens start with healthy soil. If you want to know exactly what your plants need, visit our website to order a soil test and get personalized amendment recommendations to optimize plant performance.

We’re also excited to share that we’re planning to offer cover crop seed mixes beginning in spring 2027. Stay tuned!

After years of teaching, farming, filming videos, writing articles, and answering thousands of gardening questions, I’m excited to finally share that I’m writing a book.

The Mindful Grower: A Thoughtful and Systematic Approach to Sustainable Gardening and Farming is scheduled to be released in December 2027.

For a long time, I’ve dreamed of bringing everything I’ve learned into one clear, practical, and detailed guide. My goal is to help you cut through the noise, get the most out of your growing space, and build systems that save time, reduce costs, and work with nature rather than against it.

We’ll dive deep into soil health, ecology, pest and disease management, season extension, and creating productive gardens and farms with a thoughtful yet minimalist approach. The focus isn’t on doing more. It’s on doing the right things well.

Whether you’re growing in a backyard, a homestead, or on a small farm, I want this book to help you grow more food with less stress and greater confidence.

Follow along as I share the writing process, behind-the-scenes updates, and sneak peeks of what’s coming over the next year and a half. I can’t wait to bring this project to life.

The Florida weave is one of the fastest and most affordable ways to trellis tomatoes, peppers, and other crops at scale while keeping plants upright and fruit clean.

Comment “YouTube Trellis” and we’ll send you our full trellising playlist.

How has time flown by so fast?! Feels like just the other day I was planting that pear tree next to the shed with a little boy in diapers. Now that pear tree is 25 feet tall and that little boy is almost a teenager.

This garden has been growing in this space for the past eight years. Each year we are focusing on and feeding the soil and each year the garden has gotten easier to manage and yielded more. We have tried our best to create a healthy garden ecosystem and now it is rewarding us with abundance and balance.

While it might appear in the short video that we spend a lot of time working in the garden, it is mostly time observing, appreciating, and harvesting. That early work is paying dividends now.

This is actually our first w**ding on the garden all season in preparation for a photo shoot tomorrow. I’m excited to tell you guys more about that soon, too.
