Homestead Reality Check: Why We Pause Summer Breeding at Rustic Blossom Acres ☀️🐇

We get asked all the time if we breed our rabbits during the summer months! While we love growing our herd, the extreme Southwest Oklahoma heat means we take an intentional pause—and here is a peek into why and how we run things here on the homestead.

Many people don't realize that heat sterilization is a very real issue for bucks that aren’t kept in climate-controlled quarters. When high temperatures hit, male rabbits experience temporary sterility, and it can take 60 to 90 days of cooler weather for them to fully recover and become viable again.

Now, TAMUK rabbits were specifically bred at Texas A&M University-Kingsville to handle southern humidity and high heat much better than traditional breeds—featuring larger ears with thin fur to dump body heat naturally. But even with a heat-hardy composite breed, biology is biology!

Over time, we’ve fine-tuned a solid cooling system that keeps our fluffle safe, comfortable, and thriving through the hottest months. But when it comes to breeding, we put their health and long-term well-being first.

Our official rule? We will be holding off on breeding until outdoor temperatures remain a consistent 80°F or below.

Quality care and healthy rabbits are always worth the wait! Thank you all for supporting our ethical homestead practices, and stay tuned for fall litter announcements.

Look what we managed to gather here at Rustic Blossom Acres! 🌿✨

We just did a little harvest of our homegrown goji berries. If you’ve never tried a fresh goji berry, they have a wonderfully unique, zesty, peppery taste that makes them an absolute standout addition to fresh summer salads and culinary dishes.

Beyond their bold flavor, these little powerhouse superfoods are packed with incredible health benefits. They are loaded with antioxidants, Vitamin C, and essential minerals to help support immune health, promote glowing skin, and give you a natural boost of vitality.

It might not look like a massive harvest just yet, but considering that a single goji berry can pack roughly 30 to 50 tiny seeds inside, this little handful is more than enough. These exact seeds are going to be our homestead starters for expansions and new crops in the years to come! 🌱❤️

🌿 Wild Harvest at Rustic Blossom Acres! 🌿

We are so excited to share that we’ve officially completed our first-ever harvest of Curly Dock seeds! These rust-colored beauties have been on our radar for a while, and we finally have a container full to show for it.

Why are we so excited about these little seeds?

-Nutritional Boost: They are a fantastic, foraged source of calcium, energy, and carbohydrates.

-Culinary Versatility: Once you strip away the papery chaff, you can grind these seeds down into a gluten-free flour. It has a lovely, nutty flavor that works beautifully when mixed with conventional flour for crackers, cookies, or brownies.

-Digestive Support: Traditionally, the dried seeds are brewed into a tea that acts as a natural astringent to help settle stomachs and treat mild diarrhea.

⚠️ A Very Important Note on Safety ⚠️

While foraging is rewarding, it must be done with caution. Curly Dock contains oxalic acid, so it should be consumed in moderation to avoid potential issues like kidney stones.

Furthermore, never harvest a plant unless you are 100% certain of its identification. There are toxic plants that can be confused with dock. A dangerous example is the Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea); its leaves can look somewhat similar to dock in the early stages, but Foxglove is highly toxic and can cause serious health emergencies if ingested.

Always use a reliable field guide or consult with a local expert before consuming anything you forage!

A milestone moment at Rustic Blossom Acres! 😍✨

We are beyond thrilled to share that we’ve harvested our very first plum ever on the property—and the first of the season! 🍑🙌

Considering we planted this tree only about a year or two ago, it feels like such a huge win. Even though it’s the only one out of 30+ flowers that made it, we’re celebrating every bit of that growth! 🥳 Most plum trees typically take about 3–6 years to start bearing fruit after being planted, so seeing this little success so early is just amazing. 🌳💪

Beyond the excitement of the harvest, it’s great to know these beauties are doing as much for our health as they are for our joy. Plums are packed with:

- Heart Health: ❤️ They’re rich in potassium and antioxidants, which help support healthy blood pressure and reduce inflammation.

- Digestive Support: 🌿 High in both fiber and sorbitol, they are nature's way of keeping things moving smoothly.

- Blood Sugar Balance: 📉 With a low glycemic index, they satisfy those sweet cravings without the sharp sugar spikes.

It’s been a labor of love getting these trees established, and this first bite makes every minute of care worth it. Here’s to many more harvests to come! 🥂🧺✨

To harvest, or not to harvest—that is the question! 🎭🌶️

We spy, with our little eyes... some sneaky poblano peppers! The garden game of hide-and-seek today. They have truly mastered the art of blending in! 🕵️‍♀️🙈

Help us decide—are they ready for the kitchen, or do they need a little more time to grow? Take a look at the image and tell us:

How many hidden peppers can you spot?
What would you do: Harvest or Wait?

Let’s settle this garden dilemma in the comments! 👇

We just picked our first raspberries of the year. To top it off, the cherry tomatoes and goji berries are ripening up fast and looking incredible.

Look who decided to pop up in the veggie garden! 🌻

We didn't plant this one, but we are certainly glad it found its way here. It’s been amazing to watch it grow, and it’s already doing a fantastic job attracting pollinators to the garden. Sometimes the best additions are the ones that happen by surprise! 🐝🦋

Oh, the memories!

Taking a little trip down memory lane today at Rustic Blossom Acres. These sweet faces are a total blast from the past—the 'A' Litter, children of Justice's Rocco.🐾

Looking back at how much they’ve grown reminds us exactly why we love what we do here. ❤️
