A little helper in the garden! 🐝✨

Spotted this gorgeous bumblebee taking a well-deserved rest on one of our young apple trees today.

Pollinators like this hard worker are the heartbeat of Rustic Blossom Acres. Without them, our fruit trees, wildflowers, and garden beds wouldn't thrive the way they do!

The Unsung Gym Bros of Rustic Blossom Acres! 🏋️‍♂️🪲✨

Move over, gym bro—this guy doesn't skip leg day!

We spotted one of nature’s hardest workers carefully maneuvering its prize across the dirt today. This little roller dung beetle (often called a "tumblebug") is taking out the trash and building our soil all in one shift.

While they might not be the flashiest critters on the property, these tiny soil superheroes are absolute powerhouses for homestead ecosystem health:
-Natural Fertilizer: They roll up manure and bury it deep underground, enriching the root zones naturally.
-Soil Aeration: Their tunneling loosens up the dirt, improving drainage and root growth.
-Pest Control: By breaking down manure quickly, they interrupt the life cycle of annoying flies and pests.

Building healthy soil isn't just about what we plant—it's about supporting the microscopic and insect life beneath our feet. Every time we spot beneficial insects like this doing their job, it’s a rewarding reminder of how incredible nature's setup really is. Healthy soil = happy homestead! 🌿🌾

Homestead Reality Check: Why We Pause Summer Breeding at Rustic Blossom Acres ☀️🐇

We get asked all the time if we breed our rabbits during the summer months! While we love growing our herd, the extreme Southwest Oklahoma heat means we take an intentional pause—and here is a peek into why and how we run things here on the homestead.

Many people don't realize that heat sterilization is a very real issue for bucks that aren’t kept in climate-controlled quarters. When high temperatures hit, male rabbits experience temporary sterility, and it can take 60 to 90 days of cooler weather for them to fully recover and become viable again.

Now, TAMUK rabbits were specifically bred at Texas A&M University-Kingsville to handle southern humidity and high heat much better than traditional breeds—featuring larger ears with thin fur to dump body heat naturally. But even with a heat-hardy composite breed, biology is biology!

Over time, we’ve fine-tuned a solid cooling system that keeps our fluffle safe, comfortable, and thriving through the hottest months. But when it comes to breeding, we put their health and long-term well-being first.

Our official rule? We will be holding off on breeding until outdoor temperatures remain a consistent 80°F or below.

Quality care and healthy rabbits are always worth the wait! Thank you all for supporting our ethical homestead practices, and stay tuned for fall litter announcements.
