🌱 Building better soil through regenerative farming!

Here in Bridgewater, NJ, we have a loamy clay soil, which can be extremely firm and challenging to work with. It also doesn’t naturally have the rich organic matter that many crops thrive in, especially crops like garlic, potatoes, onions, and other root vegetables.

As a regenerative farm, our goal is to give back to the earth rather than constantly take from it. We do this in a number of ways: using wood chips as mulch, making our own compost, collecting rainwater for irrigation, and finding ways to build our soil naturally.

This video is a great example of how we’re rebuilding our soil and creating the ideal growing environment for the crops we grow!

🌿 One of our favorite plants for doing this is comfrey.

We grow comfrey throughout our garden for a few different reasons. First, it’s known as a nutrient accumulator, with deep roots that can access nutrients from deeper layers of the soil that many of our crops can’t reach.

We can then use the plant’s biomass, the leaves and stems, to make our own liquid fertilizer, which we’ll show you how to make in another video!

The second reason we love comfrey is because it makes an incredible living mulch and source of organic matter. It dies back in the winter and returns in the spring. As that plant material breaks down, it returns nutrients and organic matter to the soil.

Over time, this helps us build a rich, healthy layer of topsoil above our naturally heavy clay, creating a much better environment for our crops to grow in.

The result? We can build roughly a foot of rich, organic soil for our crops to grow in, while the clay underneath acts like a natural sponge, holding onto water.

We’re able to create our own fertilizer, build healthier soil, increase organic matter, and reduce how much we need to irrigate, all from incorporating one plant into our growing system.

This is what regenerative farming is all about: working with nature instead of constantly working against it.

And the best part? Many of these practices are rooted in agricultural and permaculture principles that have been used for thousands of years.

🌱 Community partnerships like this are what make local agriculture so rewarding!

We’re proud to be back for our second year partnering with RWJ Somerset to provide fresh, locally grown produce to families participating in the SNAP program throughout Somerset County. šŸ„•šŸ…šŸ„¬

Access to healthy food can make a real difference, and we’re honored to play a small part in helping our neighbors put nutritious, farm-fresh produce on their tables. šŸ’š

A huge thank you to RWJ Somerset for making programs like this possible and for investing in the health of our community!

Most people spend a ton of money every week on produce from grocery stores that’s traveled thousands of miles and is picked before it’s even ripe. By the time it gets to your plate, it’s lost a lot of its freshness, flavor, and nutrients. When you sign up for our farm box, you’re getting produce at its peak—freshly harvested, grown right here in your hometown, and coming directly from a small family-run farm. It’s better quality, supports local, and honestly just tastes the way food is supposed to.

ā€œIf you didn’t go to the grocery store for a week, they wouldn’t notice. If you didn’t support a small farmer for a week, it could change their life.ā€

Every time I walk through the grocery store, I notice how much of the food is ā€œcreatedā€ using little more than sugars, starches, oils, and a long list of ingredients most of us can’t even pronounce.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a delicious snack every now and then. But when ultra-processed foods become the majority of our diet, it’s no surprise our nation is struggling with its health.

Real food comes from the earth, not a lab. Fruits, vegetables, quality proteins, and ingredients you can recognize, that’s what fuels our bodies the right way.

Balance is key, but we can’t let convenience replace nutrition. šŸŒ±šŸ„•šŸ…
