Gyromitra esculenta (/venenata) is a toxic mushroom that you should not eat. It has intricate wrinkles in its reddish-brown, brain-like cap on a brownish stipe.

Continuing on the many factors of people "eating 'beefsteak'(/false) morels for 50 years and being just fine," is the issue of toxicity being different depending on which patch of these you pick them from.

Mycology is a fast-developing science and only a limited number of scientists are investigating the many questions we have about this massive kingdom of life. One thing we do know is that the exact amounts of different compounds within a mushroom can change due to the exact environmental factors where that mushroom is growing. The amount of rain or sunlight, the temperature of the soil, even the surrounding tree types may change the potency of a mushroom to be more or less toxic.

Furthermore, the effects of gyromitrin compound over time. Small amounts of irreversible damage over and over again means noticeable damage after years of exposure. Deterioration of liver function and more pronounced neurological impairments is the result of continuing to eat these mushrooms. There is also a few studies that correlate higher instances of developing ALS (lou gehrig's disease) with long-term exposure to this toxin.

➑️These are not hard to find, especially if you go out looking for morels because they grow in the same areas. But they are not safe to eat. Go ahead and pick them, look at them, take pictures, cut them in half or break them apart, kick em into the woods or leave them be. Just don't eat them.

"False morels" refers to any wrinkly mushroom that some people might mistake for a morel. It is important to not get the intricate wrinkles of a false morel confused with the defined pits of a true morel.

One of the many factors of people "eating 'beefsteak'(/false) morels for 50 years and being just fine" is due to the confusion around the many different species of false morels. A lot of mushrooms that fall into this category and it can be difficult to distinguish between.

🚫 Gyromitra esculenta (/venenata) is a toxic morel look-alike. It has a dark brown, usually reddish, brain-shaped cap on a delicate, brown stipe. The inside of both the the mushroom cap and stipe is hollow. This mushroom contains monomethylhydrazine, or Gyromitrin, a dangerous toxin and carcinogen that affects the liver and nervous system.

βœ…οΈ Neogyromitra korfii (formerly Gyromitra korfii) is a false morel with a medium-brown, deeply wrinkled cap on a chunky, white stipe. It's cap margins are visible and curve away from the base of the stipe. An excellent description I heard from another mushroom person was "the cap looks like a wet washcloth dropped into the stipe." These mushrooms contain NO gyromitrin toxin and are safe to eat.

➑️ NEVER, EVER EAT A WILD MUSHROOM IF YOU ARE NOT 100% CERTAIN OF ITS IDENTIFICATION ⬅️

Mushroom season is upon us! Unfortunately, some of the first mushrooms to pop up include this toxic variety which gives me more greif than any other because folks just don't want to believe that they are TOXIC!

Gyromitra esculenta (or "Gyromitra venenata" according to the most up-to-date taxonomy) contains a toxin called monomethylhydrazine, or Gyromitrin. This toxin affects your liver and your brain and the effects compound over time with more exposure.

This is not up for debate, it is well-established science: these are toxic mushrooms and you should not eat them and you DEFINITELY should never tell anyone else that they are safe to eat because they are not.

November is not the typical season for these in the UP, but this big Chanterelle was just sitting there waiting for me! It really goes to show that you'll never know what you find as long as you get out and walk around in the woods a little bit and look at things πŸ˜‰ πŸ’œπŸ„

Coprinus comatus; Shaggy mane, Lawyer's wig, Chicken leg mushroom

This edible ink cap mushroom comes out in the spring and fall, and is best harvested while it's cap is all-white. It must be quickly refrigerated and may only keep for a day or so before turning into black goo, so they're best eaten immediately after harvesting.

See you there!

Shrimp of the Woods, or Entoloma abortivum, attacks the underground (or "underwood") structure of the Honey Mushroom, Armillaria. I found this amazing specimen showing off the relationship between these two edible mushroom species!
