Nalani Horse Rescue (Nalani is Hawaiian for “the Heavens”) is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to rescuing horses who have suffered abuse, neglect and/or trauma. Our mission is to provide horses in need of rescue with care, rehabilitation and training with the goal of finding them safe, forever homes. Verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, we are committed to giving hors
es an opportunity to meet their potential in a loving, healthy, and trusting environment. It is a peaceful haven for horses who have been through trauma. There are many factors that lead to a horse being dumped at an auction and headed to a horrific journey and terrifying death in a slaughterhouse. A horse costs at minimum $3K - 10K a year to feed and maintain. Often, people with the best of intentions fall on hard times and can no longer feed and give the proper care to a horse. In the racing and sport horse world, horses are often started far too young and sustain injuries early in life that limit their ability to perform, making them unwanted. As horses age and are no longer able to do a job (whether it’s a lesson horse, cart horse, or show horse), they are often discarded. Sadly, the world is full of cruel people who abuse, neglect, and starve horses for seemingly no reason. Over 100,000 horses are shipped to slaughter every year. Most of our rescues come from an auction where we bid directly against the "meat' buyer to save them from a terrible fate.

Getty probably thought we were crazy, but with the forecast ahead we have to be ready! We made sure he and all the horses have a sheet that fits well. I think blue is his color. Isn’t he handsome? 😍💙
I purchased my truck from Country Chevrolet Warrenton Virginia in 2019 and they have been supporting Nalani ever since! I’m grateful for their sponsorship of Hike for Horses and for their continued great service! 🐎
Happy horses! And pup. 🐎🐾
I have been so excited to share this update on Angel! 💖🙏🏻💫
Angel, the skeletal horse we rescued from the New Holland Sales Stable on a freezing November day quickly became everyone’s favorite on my social media feed. The video of her tied outside the auction in sub freezing temps, thin, wet and shivering. The first time she touched my hand and walked towa...
As hot as it was today, farrier day was a success! Spirit continues to be more relaxed each time and Teddy stood close by his side for moral support. Getty was a perfect gentleman for his first full trim and Brew got front shoes and some hot pink bell boots! 😍💕 Thank you Victoria Solzbach for always being so kind and patient with the Nalani herd and Kyleigh Woodrick for assisting.
Little Remi is always excited and thankful for his tiny bowl of grain. He’s naturally chunky (quarter horse!) and he doesn’t need calories outside of hay. However, he suffered a catastrophic injury to his back lower leg before his rescue so he does have important meds/supplements that are given with his meals. That face tho…he is the sweetest!! 🥰🐎
Getty’s weekend included a cool bath, relaxing with fans, alfalfa hay and lots of love. Not too shabby! 💙
I’ve been busy with the girls, but I haven’t forgotten about our July 4th save who has been doing his time in quarantine. Yesterday, he got the all clear to travel to Va next week. I can’t wait to meet Get Your Program, “Getty”. ❤️💙❤️
Thank you to all who donated so we could schedule a series of bodywork appointments for Silver. Second appointment went much like the first. Brew continues to be insistent on “helping”. 🥰💖
How cute is this little visitor? Teddy agrees! 🩵
Silver’s poor body is so sore and tight after everything she’s been through. She had a bodywork session today (mayofascial release) and she loved it! Her lower lip was hanging and she kept looking at me like “is this really happening?!” She is such a sweet and grateful soul. 💖 Her BFF, Brew, was by her side and getting in on the action. 😂😍 Olivia is so wonderful with them.
We would love to give Silver a few more sessions to get her more comfortable. If you would like to help us, you can donate through this post or Venmo with comment “Silver”. Thank you so much! 🩶🩶🩶
This one has broken my heart more than once.💔 ‘Silverstar Grande’. Just like Brew, she is a thoroughbred mare who was bred to race. But that’s where the similarities end. She never did race and somehow she ended up at one of the worst livestock auctions in the country where she was bought by an Amish farmer. A horse dealer went to buy two draft horses from the farmer and by chance, he saw her standing in a dark, damp manure filled barn. So he bought her too, hoping a rescue would help her. On the heels of saving Brew, I was worried about funds, but your donations allowed me to save her. 🙏🏻
She arrived to Nancy Diaz in horrible shape. At one point, I asked the vet if it would best to humanely eurhanize her. She has come so far. I think Nancy was determined to save her and Silver is a tough one!
She is a kind and loving gentle giant and I’m so thrilled she’s finally here. 💖
The many lives of ‘Brew by You’. A well-bred thoroughbred who earned $ racing, she spent part of her life as a lesson horse where she received love and care. She was sold more than once with good intentions, but the reality is she was one transaction away from being starved and neglected. That’s where we stepped in. We saved her at the end of February, but once in quarantine with Nancy Diaz, she immediately showed symptoms of Strangles, a very contagious virus among horses. Four months later, we are so happy she was finally cleared to come to Nalani. A new chapter begins, but this time she has the promise of being forever safe. 💕🐎
They’re here! Silver and Brew are just as sweet as they are gorgeous! 🐎💖🐎
Oh happy day…the girls are on their way!! Silver and Brew don’t even look like rescue horses anymore, thanks to the wonderful care they received from Nancy Diaz. It’s been a long time coming and I’m so excited to meet them. 🐎💖🐎
Good Morning and Happy Independence Day! ❤️🤍💙
Every Monday morning, New Holland Sales Stable is filled with horses, many of them Amish work horses who are no longer able to do the miles. A sea of brown Standardbreds. It’s hard to stand out and be chosen. But, when I heard this horse was going to be taken to the auction today, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Thank you to Nancy Diaz for showing up at the farm at daybreak and asking the Amish farmer to let her buy him. He agreed to a price of $500 and now he is ours. All we know about him is he has been passed around to Amish farmers. No doubt, he’s had a rough life. At 26, he has certainly earned a retirement, and I have chosen to help him. He is safe now, but he needs continued support. I would like to raise $2000 to cover his fee to the farmer, quarantine, Vet, farrier, vaccines, etc. All help is so appreciated. Don’t we all just want to be chosen? 🐴🙏🏻💙
Look at Winnie living her best life being loved on by little campers. 🥰 When we adopt our horses out, we take the time to find the perfect fit, taking into account each horse’s personality and what we truly believe will give them the life they deserve. Sometimes it takes a little longer to find that person, but the end result is always worth it. 💖
Rescue horses are no less valuable or desirable than other horses; they are simply horses who have been let down by humans. 🐴💔💗
Going exploring is fun when you have built trust! Angel enjoyed her little adventure with Katie. 💖
A huge THANK YOU to all of the Deloitte staff who spent their day with us creating a new ‘dry lot’ paddock. It’s truly an and we are so grateful! 🐎🙌🏻
Hallelujah! Brew has finally been cleared by the vet to come to Virginia. 🎉 Nancy Diaz has been taking excellent care of her and even created her own private turnout space while she has had to be isolated. But after 3 months of quarantine, we are so ready to meet her and watch her run free. 🐎🩷
Look at Miss Winnie! She is doing great under saddle and her new family loves her! 💖
It’s hard to believe this is the same horse! Angel looks so confident and proud. So beautuful to see! 💖
Winnie’s adoption story. 💖
I miss seeing these two faces every day, but seeing them happy in their new home is even better! 💙💙
It’s been 2 months since Silver was pulled out of that nasty barn covered in manure. She doesn’t even look like the same horse. What a beauty she is! 🐴
Spirit modeling his fly mask…it’s kind of a big deal! He is very sensitive about any touching near his ears and around the top of his head. We can now approach him in an open field and put his mask on. He enjoys having some neck scratches afterwards. Love this horse and I’m so proud of how trusting he has become! 💙
These boys are in heaven with green grass for days! 💚
The cutest pony is available for adoption. Winnie is a 15 year old, 14.0 chestnut pony who loves attention and can be led and handled by a tiny child. She lifts her feet, ties, is great for the vet and farrier, grooming and blanketing. She is a great babysitter (has been turned out with a young OTTB).
We have given her a great foundation on the ground. She has not been ridden, but there is no reason why she couldn't be started by the right person. She is barefoot and an easy keeper.
Winne would be happiest in a home where she receives a lot of love. Children are a plus.
If you think you might be Winnie's forever person, message here or email [email protected]. She is located in Haymarket, VA. 🐴💖
We have the best volunteers! Teddy is saying “Thank you!” (he’s actually saying “give me more attention” but thank you sounded better 😂)
Charlie and Warrior have been in their new home for a week. When I first met the man who adopted them, they had just arrived at Nalani. He was inquiring about adopting Duke. He and his wife are semi-retired and had bought a property that was horse ready. They had even rented their basement to a woman who owned a horse that she kept on their property. But….they had never owned horses themselves. I didn’t think there was any way that he was prepared to adopt a horse, but I felt like he just needed some horse time so I invited them out to the farm. I introduced them to our horses and told them their stories. I could instantly tell they were kind people. After that visit, we kept in touch. At one point, he asked me how those two skinny horses that had just arrived when he visited were doing. He started coming to the rescue and shadowing one of our volunteers twice a week, soaking up as much as he could.
Eventually, it was clear that he had a soft spot for Charlie and Warrior, so we made a plan. I helped him get his property ready and we moved forward with the adoption. I have never met two people more dedicated to learning so they can give these horses the very best home. They are surrounded by neighbors who are horse people and willing to help, and we will make weekly visits to check in.
So many people invested in one outcome….giving these two horses the life they deserve….together. I couldn’t have hoped for anything more. 🐴💙🐴
Happy little herd. 🐎🐎🐎🐎
Sweet Remi. 💙 I rescued him on my second trip to the New Holland auction. He was only 5 then and had suffered a catastrophic injury and made his way through a few auctions before he ended up at the end of the line. He quickly became everyone’s favorite because he is so sweet and adorable. He was adopted into a wonderful home and has been loved and cared for, but life happens when you least expect it. We brought him back to Nalani yesterday. I am thankful for the friendships that I have with our adopters and the fact that I know where every single one of our horses is. When we rescue a horse, we are forever committed to them and they are always welcome back. This was a heartbreaking situation for his adopter, but knowing he is safe with us provided some comfort during a difficult time. Bonus: Remi and Teddy had a sweet reunion. ❤️❤️❤️
Great night for Nalani at the Loudoun County Equine Alliance 2023 Expo. We ran into old friends and made many new connections. Thank you to the organizers for putting on such a great event! 🐎
There is nothing better than seeing horses who were bound for slaughter living their lives in paradise. 🐴💙💫
Thank you Properties on the Potomac,Inc. for sponsoring Nalani at the Loudoun 56th Annual Loudoun Hunt Point to Point at Morven Park yesterday! It was a great day meeting new people and telling them about our mission. 🐎
Charlie and Warrior settled into their new home beautifully. I will share their adoption story soon. As always, it’s a beautiful one! 🐴❤️
Kicking off Volunteer Appreciation Week with a big THANK YOU to our team of dedicated volunteers. Our horses get the get very best care thanks to these faces and many more not pictured here. 🐴
