KEEPING A DIARY OF THE FIRE
First diary entry:
March 12, 2026

We decided to start writing down the days of our fire.

Not because we want to relive it, but because I don’t want to forget the things that happened after the flames were gone.

The moments that hurt.
The little victories.
The things we found in the ashes.
The cattle we fought to save.
The fences we rebuilt.
The people who showed up.
The prayers that carried us.
And the days when simply putting one foot in front of the other was enough.

There are parts of this journey that will never show up in a picture.

This diary is a way to remember.

Day by day. Story by story.

This is our journey through the aftermath of the Beast—and hopefully, someday, the story of how we rebuilt stronger than before.

The fire changed our landscape.
It changed us, too.

But the Beast is not going to get the final word.

There are moments in life when words simply aren’t enough.

This benefit supper hosted by Kent Rollins and Shannon was one of those moments.

As we watched the tent fill with people who came to stand beside our family, we were reminded that we have never had to walk this road alone.

The fire took a lot from us. It changed our land, our work, our days, and parts of our hearts that may never be quite the same.

But then came the people.

People who prayed.
People who gave.
People who cooked.
People who drove.
People who showed up.
People who simply said, “We’re here. You’re not alone.”

And somehow, in the middle of so much loss, God kept showing us His goodness through the hands and hearts of others.

To everyone who had a part in this evening—there is no way we can ever fully repay you. Please know that every hug, every dollar, every prayer, every kind word, and every act of kindness meant more than you will ever know.

We walked into that fire as a family.

And we are walking out of it surrounded by a community that feels like family.

From the bottom of our hearts… thank you. Thank you Angus Beef® and Sonny’s Super Market for the beef.

The Beast burned a lot of what we knew, but it never stood a chance against the love, faith, and kindness that surrounded us.

9. Get off the fence. Some things require a decision.
10. Know your worth — and don’t settle for less.
11. Take the picture. Someday it will be a memory.
12. Love your tribe fiercely.
13. When in doubt, pray and keep putting your feet in front of the other.
14. Don’t borrow trouble from tomorrow.
15. God is only a prayer away.

🍂 There’s just something about fall.

Cool mornings, golden hills, crisp evenings, and that feeling that a new season is settling in around you.

Out here at the ranch, fall reminds us to slow down just enough to notice the little things—the changing colors, the cattle on the hills, a good cup of coffee, and the beauty God puts right in front of us.

Here’s to football, flannels, bonfires, harvest days, and making a few more memories before winter rolls in. 🤎🍂

We're back every Monday on the Outdoor Channel, visiting ranches across the country and learning how they raise their beef. Of course, Shannon and I cook up a big chuckwagon meal for each crew.

The Circle L sits on the edge of the Sandhills. This is a great piece about them.

The Nebraska Sandhills are the largest sand dune formation in America. These ancient dunes began their life in the Rocky Mountains. Glacial erosion formed the sediment and glacial melt washed it into the plains. Winds whipped up the dunes now stabilized by the roots of Nebraska's mixed grass prairie.

Dunes as high as 400 feet, 20 miles long, covering 19,600 square miles, sit on top of one of the world's largest aquifers, the Ogallala.

When the Kent Rollins truck rolled in, we knew this wasn’t just another day at the Circle L.

It was a reminder that when hard times hit, good people show up.

Kent and his crew came to our ranch with the chuck wagon, a lot of hard work, and even bigger hearts. What they brought wasn’t just a meal—it was encouragement, friendship, and a helping hand when our family needed it most.

After the fire, we’ve learned that rebuilding takes more than fence posts and grass. It takes people.

And we are forever grateful for the people who continue to show up.

Thank you, Kent, Shannon, and your entire crew, for standing with the Circle L.
