Before You Pull That “Weed”… Ask the Bees 🐝

Fall forage is incredibly important for honeybees as they prepare for winter.

These photos were taken right in our backyard at Buzz on the Point. What we might see as a patch of “w**ds,” our bees see as a late-season grocery store.

This ironw**d, along with goldenrod, asters and other fall bloomers, provides valuable nectar and pollen when many other flowers are finished for the year.

That’s why identifying what’s growing before mowing, pulling or spraying it matters. You don’t have to let the whole yard go wild—but leaving a few beneficial patches can make a big difference for pollinators.

Sometimes a w**d is only a w**d because we haven’t learned its value yet. 💜🐝

🚨 EXCUSE ME, SIR. THIS IS NOT AN ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFET. 🚨

We caught this robber fly red-handed… or should we say bee-handed… right on one of our hives.

🐝 Did you know?
Robber flies are fierce aerial predators that actually sn**ch other insects right out of the air — including honeybees. They grab their prey with those long, spiny legs, inject saliva that immobilizes it and liquefies the insides, then… well… have lunch. 🤢

They’ll eat flies, beetles, wasps and other insects too, so they’re not specifically out to get our girls.

One robber fly isn’t a threat to a healthy colony, but apparently this guy has discovered that hanging around a beehive is the insect equivalent of sitting outside the Chick-fil-A drive-thru.

Nature is fascinating…..also rude.

🐝 DID YOU KNOW? Beeswax isn’t always yellow! 💛🧡🤍

Check out the color variation in these little samples from batches of beeswax we’ve rendered! Some came from our managed hives here at Buzz on the Point, while some came from the feral colony we recently cut out—and every batch tells a slightly different story.

Freshly produced wax can be nearly white or pale cream, but over time it can become yellow, golden, orange or even brown.

What affects the color?
🍯 Age of the comb — older comb generally becomes darker
🌼 Pollen & plant sources — natural pigments can stain the wax
🌳 Propolis — those sticky plant resins bees use throughout the hive add color
🐣 How the comb was used — brood comb darkens with repeated generations of developing bees
🔥 Rendering & filtering — how wax is processed can also affect the finished color

And beeswax is WAY too useful to waste! After rendering and filtering it, it can be used for things like:

🐝 Candles & wax melts
💋 Lip balms and salves
🧴 Lotions and body products
🥣 Beeswax food wraps
🪵 Wood and leather conditioners
🧵 Waxing thread
🎨 Crafts, ornaments & more

We save our wax, render it in small batches, and find uses for as much of what our girls produce as possible.

From nearly white to deep honey-gold… there’s a whole lot of hive history hiding in those colors. 🐝💛

🐝 Unwanted Tenant Alert! 🏡

We’ve recently had the opportunity to remove a feral honey bee colony that had built a home inside a hollow stone porch pillar. Unlike managed colonies, feral bees survive entirely on their own, making this rescue both challenging and fascinating.

A huge thank you to the homeowners, The Kirn’s, for choosing relocation over extermination and trusting Buzz on the Point with the job.

We carefully transferred the bees, brood, and resources into a new hive to be relocated. Keeping the colony together gives them the best chance to settle into their new home and continue thriving.

Every rescue is another opportunity to protect pollinators, educate others, and keep the buzz going. 💛🐝

Sometimes impact happens quietly. 🤫

One of our adopters is a local school teacher who wanted to give students something more than a lesson from a textbook. By adopting a hive, the classroom gets to experience the fascinating world of honeybees through real hive updates, photos, and reports while learning about the vital role pollinators play in agriculture and our everyday lives.

Like many teachers, they were unsure how students would respond…

“I’ve been incredibly proud of their curiosity and investment in the project. I hope to inspire the next generation to appreciate, protect, and advocate for these incredible pollinators.”

And if the students could ask the bees one question?

“How does a hive stay so focused and organized under the direction of one single queen bee?” 👑

We have a feeling there are a few inside (and outside) of classrooms that could benefit from that answer, too.

To our anonymous Hive Family—thank you for helping your students discover the wonder of bees and for planting seeds of curiosity that will grow far beyond the classroom. Although they didn’t paint their own hive, I was very moved to make them one 🍎 🐝

Meet the Family Behind the Hive: Sadie Lou’s Honey Hue 🐝💛

The Myers family has been part of the Echo Point community since 2001, creating memories on the lake with family and friends every summer. While their loved ones are spread between Ohio and Arizona, one very special family member inspired the name of their adopted hive—their beloved dog, Sadie. 🐾

When they discovered Buzz on the Point’s Adopt-a-Hive program, they saw the perfect opportunity to enjoy fresh, local honey while learning more about the incredible world of bees and beekeeping.

Their favorite thing about bees? The amazing role they play in pollinating plants and helping our ecosystem thrive. 🌼

You’ll often find the Myers family boating, playing pickleball, traveling, or soaking up lake life—but they’re especially excited to learn how a hive works and, of course, all about the queen bee. 👑

And if they could ask the bees one question?

“How do you have so much energy to work nonstop every day?” 😂

Meet the Family Behind Hive: The Golden Buzzkins 🐝💛

James & Jess Hoskins! This duo shares life with their “favorite children”—a house full of Golden Retrievers—and spends their days spreading PAWZitivity, helping dogs (and their humans) live their happiest lives.

When they heard about Buzz on the Point’s Adopt-a-Hive program, it was an easy decision.

“The bees do so much for our food supply, and we wanted to be a small part of supporting their growing population while helping spread awareness of the benefits of local honey.” 🐝🍯

Their honey preferences? James is a toast-and-honey kind of guy, while Jess’s favorite is stirring local honey into a warm cup of tea. ☕🍯

And because no Hive Family Spotlight is complete without a little fun…

🐝 Today’s Adopt-a-Hive Spotlight

Meet the Family Behind the Hive: Puthoff’s Pollinators.

We’re buzzing about one of our amazing Adopt-a-Hive families! 💛

Greg, Carol, and their two spoiled four-legged daughters, Izzi and Jemma 🐾 have been part of the Echo Point family since the mid-‘90s. What keeps them coming back isn’t just the lake—it’s the people. They fell in love with a community where neighbors look out for one another and “paying it forward” is simply the way things are done.

That’s one of the reasons they chose to adopt a hive.

“The bees take care of us and our food supply, so why not help take care of them too?” 🍯🐝

When they’re not cheering on their bees, you’ll probably find them enjoying honey on warm buttered toast or a fresh biscuit or soaking up the lake and sun. They also have a soft spot for perennials…because just like good neighbors, they come back year after year. 🌼

Their favorite bee fact so far?

Girl power! 💛 Almost every bee you’ll see working in the hive is female.

We’re so thankful this wonderful family is part of the Buzz on the Point hive family. Thank you for helping us protect pollinators, support local agriculture, and keep the buzz alive! 🐝❤️

We figured that was the perfect opportunity to officially introduce you to the residents of our little apiary! Meet our current residents:

Due to an unexpected staffing change, Buzz on the Point Honey Headquarters was forced to temporarily suspended contest operations this evening.

Why?

Because management was reassigned to Bear Patrol. (See pic)

It turns out our neighborhood bear didn’t get the memo that honey season is over and decided to conduct his own quality control inspection. While Chris was keeping tabs on our furry visitor (from a respectful distance!), the contest reveal had to wait.

Now… on to what you’ve all been waiting for!

🥁 The official bucket weights were:

🍯 Top Bar Hive: 231.20 oz
🍯 Langstroth Hive (Drury): 101.15oz

And the winner of an 8 oz bottle of Buzz on the Point Honey is…

Katrina Renee was the closest guess to the combined total, without going over! She guessed 96oz and 206oz for a combined total of 302oz! ⚖️

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who liked, commented, shared, and guessed. We had a blast reading all of your predictions, and we love seeing everyone have as much fun with our little apiary as we do.
