Sometimes with Chickens π©happens... but you have to know how to hand it.
If a chicken has matted feathers due to p**p, soaking can help clean and soften the feathers for easier removal of the waste. Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. Prepare for Soaking: Fill a tub or basin (or in my case a 5 gallon bucket) with warm water (not too hot, as chickens can be sensitive to temperature).
**Optional- add a mild soap or a chicken-safe shampoo to help break down the mess.
2. Soaking Time: Soak the affected areas for about 10 to 15 minutes. This should be sufficient to soften the matted p**p.
3. Gentle Cleaning: After soaking, gently work the feathers with your fingers or a soft cloth to remove the waste. Be careful not to pull too hard, as this can hurt the chicken.
4. Rinse: Rinse the feathers thoroughly with clean lukewarm water to remove any soap residue.
5. Drying: After cleaning, gently towel dry the chicken and, if it's safe to do so, allow the chicken to air dry in a warm area. Avoid using a hairdryer, as the noise and heat can stress the bird.
6. Check for Further Issues: After cleaning, keep an eye on the chicken for any signs of skin irritation or infection, particularly in the cleaned area.
Make sure that you are regularly monitoring your chickens for cleanliness as this can help prevent severe matting! If matting occurs frequently, you may want to assess their living conditions and your choice of bedding.
