Why Roosters Shouldn’t Eat Layer Feed 🐓🚫

Short takeaway: Layer feed is designed for hens actively producing eggs, not for roosters. The calcium levels that help hens build strong shells can slowly harm a rooster’s kidneys and overall health.

🌾 What’s Actually in Layer Feed?

• High calcium levels — formulated for eggshell production
• Lower protein content — because hens don’t need as much muscle-building nutrition
• Vitamin/mineral ratios — tailored to laying cycles, not rooster metabolism

Layer feed is excellent for hens laying regularly… but it’s the wrong tool for the job when it comes to your boys.

---

⚠️ Why It’s Unsafe for Roosters

• Calcium overload — excess calcium stresses the kidneys and can lead to long‑term damage
• Reduced fertility — improper nutrition affects s***m quality
• Weakened overall condition — roosters need more protein and different micronutrients to stay strong and active

Roosters don’t use calcium the way hens do, so it builds up instead of being used.

---

🐓 What Should Roosters Eat Instead?

• All‑flock feed (20% protein is ideal)
• Grower feed for mixed-age or mixed-sex flocks
• Free-choice oyster shell offered separately for hens only

This lets hens get the calcium they need while roosters safely avoid it.

---

💡 Pro Tip for Mixed Flocks

If you keep everyone together (like most of us do), the easiest system is:

• All-flock feed for everyone
• Oyster shell on the side for the ladies

Roosters naturally ignore the oyster shell, and hens take what they need.

---

🐔 Final Thought

Feeding the right diet keeps your roosters healthy, fertile, and active—whether they’re flock protectors, breeders, or just handsome yard ornaments. Healthy boys mean a healthier flock overall.

🦃💛 Why You Should Own Turkeys — Campbell Cluck & Quail Edition 💛🦃

Turkeys don’t always get the spotlight on the homestead, but they absolutely deserve it. If you’ve ever wondered whether they’re worth adding to your flock, the answer is a big, gobbly YES. Here’s why these gentle giants make fantastic additions to small farms and backyard setups.

---

🌿 Natural Pest Control

Turkeys are incredible foragers. They’ll happily patrol your property for grasshoppers, beetles, ticks, and other pests. Their wide-ranging curiosity means they cover more ground than chickens or quail.

🏡 Friendly Personalities

Turkeys are surprisingly social and affectionate. Many owners describe them as dog‑like—curious, calm, and eager to follow you around. They bond easily with people and quickly become farm favorites.

🍳 Great Egg Layers

Turkey eggs are rich, creamy, and delicious. They’re larger than chicken eggs and perfect for baking. While they don’t lay year‑round like quail or chickens, the eggs you do get are a treat.

🌱 Low Maintenance

Despite their size, turkeys are hardy, adaptable birds. They thrive in Texas climates, do well on pasture, and aren’t nearly as fragile as many people assume.

🧬 Heritage Breed Preservation

Raising heritage turkeys helps keep rare breeds thriving. Many heritage lines are calmer, healthier, and more sustainable than commercial varieties.

🍗 Sustainable Meat Option

For homesteaders raising their own food, turkeys provide a high‑quality, flavorful meat source. Heritage birds especially offer exceptional taste and slower, more natural growth.

💛 At Campbell Cluck & Quail

We love turkeys for their gentle nature, their goofy charm, and the way they bring personality to the farm. They’re big birds with even bigger hearts, and once you raise one, you’ll understand why so many keepers fall in love with them.
