Crazy weather lately, beautiful sunshine too 16° freezing nights.
Our gilt Bam~Bam decided it was time to farrow on our coldest night so far and NO not in her shelter but out in the woods in a bed of leaves ! SHE IS PROVING TO BE A GREAT MOMMA just like her mother and sisters. 8 healthy vibrant piglets totally unassisted. She is one proud sow, she came and got me the next morning and led me to her nest to show off [ and beg for molasses treats ]. Pigs are so loveable- on the grill and on the hoof !

Can't wait for 2020 in hindsight!
What a horrible year...a real game changer.
Virus wasn't enough ~ add neighbor shooting and disabling a prize sow nursing piglets, tractor crapped out while feeding, pet 450lb BOAR ( A REAL TEDDYBEAR ) got h***y and destroyed 3 fences to challenge 3 other boars, resulting in everyone getting gashes a bloody fight ! ( No I didn't referee or sell tickets but wished I had a video) I think they will heal up ok but they will have SCARS.. I guess its just another day on the farm, but 2020 every bad thing that happens seems to come in clusters and makes you feel like your treading water in a shark pool.
HERE IS HOPING 2021 WILL BE A YEAR OF BLESSINGS! GOD BLESS US ALL ~ WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOUR HELP.
stay healthy and well fed particularly on delicious pork~ smile and say BACON 🥓

Sorry been swamped lately- logging a section of property to improve forage for our hogs...
Replacing non-productive Pines, with Mulberry trees and Hazelnuts...[ side note - Truffles are known to grow in hazelnut groves amongst the roots...here's to hoping! ].

Just a howdy yall -
I've been quiet, had a bit if an accident, a dead tree fell spooked our mastiff, she ran for cover wrapping her chain around my foot - me sailing thru the afraid landing on my right chest / the ribs I broke last year....well broke again only better.
Then this cripple walks out to do chores in the rain, steps on a metal grate ramp that is now slicker than a banana peel and legs fly out from under me landing my butt and arm on this sharp steel grater.....my backside has grater tracks from my back down my legs and both arms sliced up good.

Oh crap I still have to feed my pigs and change a tire on my truck so I can go get feed- who said farming was easy ?

Be safe out there

Do you enjoy giving belly rubs ?
For a small admission - you to can enjoy the satisfaction of being mauled by a hoard of piglets all begging to be next for a belly rub !
If Bio- hazard & threat of swine diseases weren't a concern - there would be a long line of humans wanting to participate, unfortunately not possible- particularly since we are all natural, without Antibiotics and various medications our herd could be wiped out over night. Sorry!- but for now I will try to share the experience and joy it brings thru short videos.
This video isn't greatest lighting but very fun....hope you enjoy!

Pig whisperer !
Besides being able to work hard and take alot of abuse from 2 legged & 4 legged creatures, I believe that is the number ONE qualification to being a pig farmer.

When you raise breeding stock from piglets- they bond and love you, because you feed them, rub them down and have constant daily contact.

That's not to say let your guard down when hormones are raging and breeding is on their agenda. When a 400lbs + bottle fed baby is irritated and swipes at your leg - his tusks sharp as razors slice thru your blue jeans and open a gash in your leg to remind you about caution!

Story changes a bit when you bring new breeding stock on to your farm, because not every farmer has the same connection with their animals. Unfortunately some only see $$$ sitting in their pens or pasture wondering if its enough to make a mortgage payment or keep the farm afloat.
So when handling their stock - human contact is minimal and paddles or cattle prods are used to control or move them and the process becomes almost adversarial!

Unaware of previous conditions or rough handling- some Animals get adopted into farms such as ours, that use a much different approach to management. We make our stock trust us, to the point where they will follow our lead into areas they were previously not allowed and blocked by electric fence.

Recently We acquired RUBY & CHESTER and learned quickly that neither wanted anything to do with humans!
500lbs + sow and 800lb+ boar with tusks 6-7 inches long and able to inflict deadly wounds that would be fatal if provoked.

For past 3 weeks I've spent many hours trying to gain enough trust to even touch either of them. .
TODAY WAS MOMENTOUS! Ruby finally allowed me into her pen and give her a 10 or 15 min full body rub/scratching that got her tail wagging and twirling- to a pig person that is an awesome achievement!
Chester didn't want to be left out, although he swiped at me when I touched his ear and snarled [ he doesn't like his ears touched] he actually let me scratch behind his ears, head and huge front shoulders. This was done from across an electric fence for safety. After this first step I got in his pen with him and taught him to come when called like a puppy and he comes to my hand and smells the back of my fingers. We teach this to all our stock so they can come to our boundary stop and sniff.

A few months back we sold a boar to a gentleman. When he arrived the boar had gotten loose and the man said bow we'll be all day trying to catch and load him. I said no, just sit a moment and I'll take care of it. I called the boar over and had him follow me up the ramp, jump the gap into the cattle rack on the man's truck - 5 minutes and all loaded and secured. Man was astonished- he said over 40 yrs working with hogs and never had a boar that would cooperate.. I replied its all in how you raise them.

We wean off piglets at roughly 8wks with several determining factors- if sow is trying to self- wean earlier or sow is losing too much weight etc all come into consideration, but normally its 8wks plus with occasional 12-14wks on certain sows that just love to be mother's.
We remove all the largest piglets first, leaving the smaller to benefit from the extra milk foe a few extra days- which helps keep saow from torture of full udder an nothing to nurse.
Sometimes the last remaining piglets are crafty /wiley. After a week of extra nursing this little gilt has eluded capture on several occasions by various means.
Today, I was determined not to be out foxed by a piglet - her continued nursing keeps sow from cycling and being rebred.
So I setup the "The Barrel Trap" a pan of feed inside, only half of barrel end is cut open to allow small pigs in while keeping larger ones out.
Success! She is caught at last...it's time for a cold Beer to celebrate...after we transport and set her in sorting pen.

Update: sitting having a cold beer after all chores finally done for the day, always more that could have been done but they will keep until tomorrow.
Suddenly, I spy that little gilt that was murder to catch running free back to momma, free as a bird.
I was determined the day wouldn't end in failure- using the extra large fishnet, I caught her once again, this time she spent the night jailed in a dog kennel we use for piglets.
A successful evening comes to a close, farming hours a varied but we work long into the evenings and sometimes nights- to insure our family, friends and customers can enjoy All Naturally Raised Pork- eat on and enjoy !
