Buffalo is home to 15+ urban farms and businesses and more than 100 community gardens. Collectively, they have transformed more than 25 acres of vacant lots into beautiful, bountiful spaces that feed their neighbors. They provide numerous social, economic, and ecosystem services for our community including job creation, community building, enhancing food security, supporting pollinator populations, educating neighbors about food production, providing green space, and so. much. more! With funding provided by Farm Credit East, ACA, we were able to highlight our urban farms' efforts during an urban agriculture tour back in September. We were joined by Buffalo Common Council members, local community leaders, Buffalo Freedom Gardens, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County, the CCE Cornell Vegetable Program, Harvest New York, the New York Farm Bureau , NRCS, Erie County Department of Environment and Planning, Massachusetts Avenue Project, and 5 Loaves Farm. We were so lucky to have @ProducedbyRifat join us on the tour so that we could share highlights with all of you! Check out the video below to learn more about Urban Fruits & Veggies, Groundwork Market Garden, Gro-op, Common Roots Urban Farm, Grassroots Gardens, Journey's End/Brewster Street Farm - Journey's End Refugee Agricultural Program, and Buffalo Freedom Gardens.
A team of #UBuffalo urban planning and architecture faculty members has received a nearly $1 million grant from the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) to test inclusive organizing models that advance policies supporting urban agriculture. The award to UB is being funded through FFAR’s Seeding Solutions program. Matching funds — raising the total grant amount to $2.1 million — are being provided by UB and the Buffalo-based organizations Massachusetts Avenue Project and Urban Fruits & Veggies, as well as Appetite For Change, Johns Hopkins University (with support from the Bloomberg American Health Initiative) and the University of Minnesota. “Recent experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic have illustrated the need for well-functioning urban food systems, which are supported by this grant. Design of such systems ought to be informed by experiences of community networks,” says UB faculty member Samina Raja, principal investigator on the project. “We are excited to co-produce this research with our community leaders to grow urban agriculture policy from the ground up,” adds Raja, professor of urban and regional planning and director of the School’s Food Lab. Partners from the School of Architecture and Planning include Martha Bohm, associate professor of architecture, and Emmanuel Frimpong Boamah, assistant professor of urban planning. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Despite these difficult times and unprecedented circumstances, we had a truly incredible season. It makes me smile to reflect on it. Our number of full-season vendors continued to grow throughout the months as did our diversity of local products. You all came out and supported WNY food producers like never before, uplifting not only the local food chain, but the local economy as well. Your purchases supported the livelihoods and families of our regional makers. Shopping small truly does create a ripple effect, while fulfilling our need as consumers to be educated and make important connections. We hope you enjoyed our sweet and savory treats, our abundant healthy local produce, our wellness items and so much more. Thank you for supporting us as a collective while we continued to learn and follow NYS guidelines to promote safety while you shopped. Thank you for complying with our changes so that we could put this season on for you! We are all doing the very best we can, and that camaraderie is a beautiful thing. From all of the vendors and myself, thank you SO, SO much! Please leave us a positive review if you feel so inclined. Our sponsorship pool was smaller this year, but deep thanks to Kenmore Business Association and Ellicott Development for their continued support! Thank you to our talented musicians who create such a positive atmosphere for all us! And to our important volunteer and incredible helper to the market, SH Portraits - Buffalo, NY Lifestyle Child, Family & Event Imagery, your work is beautiful and artfully crafts such a wonderful representation of our market. THANK YOU! Thank you to these amazing local growers, makers, and producers who showed up consistently every single week to service our community with the best products around!: Seabert Farms and Greenhouse, Urban Fruits & Veggies, Lily Acre Farm, Frank and Maria's Vegetable Farm, Kubed Root, Dirt Rich Farm, Flat #12 Mushrooms, Cornerstone Orchards LLC, Blue Eyed Baker, The Bean Bastard, Victorianbourg Wine Estate, Life Itself Yoga + Herbs, Honey Sweet Jam, Dragonfly Jams & Jellies, Raindrop Remedies, Bison Botanics, Goveggies, Nickel City Vice, Whats Pop-In Gourmet Popcorn, Moneybags Dumplings, The Blend, Sugarcane WNY, Kissed by the Sun Spice Company, Buffalo Artisan Food Traders, Herb'n Garden Farms, TILBrewing, Lilly Belle Meads, Black Button Distilling, Pacific Cloud Seafoods, Mimi's Posies, KO's Kettle Corn, Najah Corporation, We R Nuts, Moneybags Dumplings, Wuf Love Cookies, Long Weekend Bakery + Cafe, Andre Kallinikos (http://alphaimporters.com/), Vinegars, Etc. Urban Agriculture is growing in Buffalo! On Monday, CCE-Erie joined in on a tour of urban farms hosted by the Greater Buffalo Urban Growers (GBUG), a collective of urban farmers and agriculture service professionals that are working under the Food Policy Council of Buffalo and Erie County. Stops included: Gro-op, Common Roots Urban Farm, Groundwork Market Garden, Brewster Street Farm - Journey's End Refugee Agricultural Program, Grassroots Gardens, and Urban Fruits & Veggies! Throughout the tour we learned more about urban food production, barriers to urban farming, how growers have pivoted to different markets in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and most importantly, how CCE-Erie can continue to help these farmers grow their businesses and support their neighbors. To learn more about how CCE-Erie has helped grow Buffalo’s urban agriculture community, visit: http://erie.cce.cornell.edu/resources/cce-and-urban-agriculture Other folks that joined in on the tour were representatives from the Buffalo Common Council, New York Farm Bureau, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Credit East, ACA, the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning , Harvest New York, CCE Cornell Vegetable Program, and Gail Wells from Buffalo Freedom Gardens.
