Wow did I have a week!
Last week I did normal chores when my last pregnant girl was showing symptoms of delivery. My heart loves this doe!! I love all of them and ones I havenāt even met yet but she just reminds me of my first registered goat 20 years ago! So I checked the cameras in the barn it was 9:30 I saw she was really stringing the good stuff, started to pack the delivery bag get towels etc. So I head to the barn about 10:00am I sit in the barn watching the camera so she doesnāt really know I am there she starts pushing itās terrible I see she isnāt really doing much and she isnāt really opening but I see a foot so I wait about 30 minutes nothing is going anywhere she isnāt dilating more which I find so weird. So I call a goat friend and tell her I need her!! She leaves to come help. During this time I hear the water from the sack rush out with a push still see the foot so she had a contraction I grab the foot and just give it a pull then I see the other foot but nothing with the next couple contractions so I just keep pulling I see the head. I thought the baby was dead but I just keep pulling I got baby out I thought it was big but wasnāt really sure. So I of course am excited pulled a goat itās alive I have to s*x it a buck. Then I am so sad I really wanted a doe! But itās alive okay so I get a sleeve my wonderful neighbor came over to help me so I get on a sleeve go in and see if there is more! My goat friend gets here right after the big excitement, I dont feel anything. I clean the baby up weigh this baby buck and itās 8.8 pounds!! Itās huge!! I milk momma and feed baby. Watching on the camera hoping for more! She at about 1:30 pass the placenta, then starts acting like she is going into labor again. I get worried maybe there were more and I missed it. At about 3:30 the pushing got bad I got concerned and called the vet to the point I thought she was going to have a prolapse or did from the hard pushing. I got the vet to come at like 4:30 he checked no babies he gave her antibiotics because I check her more than a couple times at 3:30 pm and him. So on his way he went. She stopped the active pushing about 9:30/10 pm so the next couple days she just acted so off not really eating at all few animal crackers was it. I am sure she hurt I ripped a pretty big goat out of her and finally on Friday she had just a little above normal temperature. I asked if they could come back out to see her. They did the vet didnāt really know what to say all symptoms could be really anything infection, depression, trauma, etc. So he was kinda going to wrap it up then just started to p*e and checked her urine, she was moderately in ketosis. So I have been treating a goat with high levels of ketones, which we are still not eating great but eating some grain and meds giving a syringe of sugar syrup for the most part to get the ketones to pass and coming around to being herself again hoping she will be herself sooner than later, but the moral of the story is we know our animals the best.
