"This site is Atlanta's first Community Urban Food Forest, as well as a new model for a City of Atlanta park. The food forest will produce a wide variety of fresh, flavorful, and healthy nuts, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms, which will become available for public consumption. Located in an area identified as a food desert, the site was a working farm as recently as 2000. Neighbors still talk about the land’s former owners, Ruby and Willie Morgan, who left excess produce from their farm on fence posts for neighbors to claim and enjoy."

Join us tomorrow Saturday April 24 for an Earth Day project. We will be joined be the Garden Club and the Science Center. We start at 9am. We will be turning this desolate spot next to the garden into a native wild flower meadow. It will beautify the area and help attract pollinators to the entire area. This will be a great asset to the garden complex.

We are sad to report that the Burlington Community Garden and leased plots were vandalized and there have been some recent thefts. Especially during this pandemic, the community garden has become an important food source for the food pantry.
We are asking all members of the community to please respect this area and the hard work that goes into maintaining it.
If you happen to see any suspicious activity please notify the Burlington Police 🚔 781-272-1212.

If you need food please go to People Helping People 's Food Pantry available to all residents in need. The drive-through is open Tuesdays 3pm-7pm, Wednesday 11am-2pm, and Thursday 10am-12pm. Bring proof of residency for quick verification.

We need the the public's help!
We are seeing a HUGE increase in theft from the Burlington Community Garden, this is both from the leased plots where individuals grow for their own families and from the Victory garden where the combined efforts of hardworking volunteers grow fresh vegetables to be distributed to families in need through the People Helping People Food Pantry. We need your help in keeping an eye on the garden! Go for a stroll by the garden and let us know if you see anything suspicious. This is a picture of the damage done by a group of teenagers who were disturbed in the act and ran away. If anyone needs help putting food on the table - come to the pantry we have plenty to go around, please don't help yourself!

The garden is off to another great season. Seedlings from Farmer Dave's are planted. The garlic is growing great and the garlic scapes have been harvested. The potatoes are growing and blooming. Seeds are sprouting. Janet and Apple, two of our hardworking volunteers are busy weeding and watering. The strong foundation of compost and wood chips are helping both on keeping weeds to a minimum and to keep in moisture, but there are still work to be done.

While the garden is not officially open, with the Stay-at-home advisory still in place. Our master gardener have been making some progress on getting the garden ready for Spring. As you can see the garlic that was planted back in the fall is growing well and the potatoes have been planted. We cannot do much else until the water is turned on. But we are ready to go as soon as we are allowed to play in public places again! The seed potatoes were donated by Farmer Dave's CSA in Dracut.

Farmer Dave's

Apples and potatoes free to a good home.
As we progress through the difficult times, we want to make sure that there is no one in our community that is not well nourished. In grading through our storage crops from last falls harvest we have a large amount of B-grade, slightly blemished apples and potatoes. With a little extra cutting these will be perfectly fine to eat.

We have decided to open up the farm at 437 Parker Road in Dracut tomorrow, Saturday April 25th from 10am to 12pm to give the apples and potatoes to any families in need. We have approximately 2000 lbs of apples and 1500 lbs of potatoes. We may limit amounts to ensure we can provide food for as much of the community as we can.

When you arrive at the farm, please go to the red metal building next to the barn. There will be a table outside an open garage door, this is where the produce will be passed out from. Please observe social distancing. We will have you walk up to the table, one at a time and we will happily place what you need on that table to take.

Please share this post with anyone you think could benefit from it.
See you tomorrow!

Sowing self-sufficiency

Want to help us make this the best season yet?

We are looking for a Garden Manager:
The work can largely be done on a flexible schedule. The job entails managing communication between the master gardener, pantry staff, and Burlington Parks & Recreation. It includes recruiting, scheduling, and managing volunteers (individuals and groups), communicating what needs to be done in the garden, when, and making sure someone gets it done. The ideal candidate should be organized, have great communication skills, and have a love for locally grown fruits and vegetables. Some knowledge of gardening and use of social media is a plus. We are already starting to recruit volunteers and schedule larger group events. The gardening itself will start, depending on weather, in mid-April to mid-May and generally runs through October. This is an unpaid position.

If interested or have any questions about volunteering at the pantry or garden, please contact Jane McIninch or Cheryl Barnes by phone at 781-270-6625 or by email at [email protected]. For more information about People Helping People check out our website: peoplehelpingpeopleinc.org or find us on Facebook: People Helping People

COMMENTARY: Postal workers help stamp out hunger

This Saturday May 11, is Stamp Out Hunger, your local letter carrier will pick up any bags of food you leave by your mail box as donation to your local food pantry. This is a nationwide food drive.
Here in Burlington the pantry is in particular looking for donations of: cereal & oatmeal, pasta sauce, canned fruit, canned spinach, canned beets, canned potatoes, baby wipes, dish detergent, basmati rice.
There is also still time to volunteer to help us sort the food collected. The Burlington Food Pantry will be sorting at St. Margaret's Educational building at 111 Winn St from 1-5pm. To volunteer call or email the pantry 781-270-6625 or [email protected] or PM the garden and we will forward the information.

Almost there! This Sunday is the Walk for Hunger and you get to support us walking through Boston. Many from Burlington are walking in support of both Project Bread and our own local People Helping People. This year we get to keep 60% of any donations made to our team. Our Story

The Burlington community garden complex is located behind the Francis Wyman Elementary school athletic fields. It is unique to those of other towns in that it is comprised of three distinct activities; a volunteer “Victory Garden” growing produce for the People Helping People Food Pantry, leased plots for individuals and families that do not have growing space available at their residence, and a K-5 school garden. The area of the complex currently under cultivation is just under one-half acres. Each garden is managed by a different entity and maintenance is a cooperative effort of the Burlington Parks & Recreation, Francis Wyman staff, students & parents, and volunteers. The gardens were established in the fall of 2013, with 2014 being our first growing season.

In addition to the school garden at Francis Wyman Elementary school, a school garden can also be found behind Fox Hill Elementary School. In the school gardens, each grade level plants a different vegetable; K lettuce, 1stgrade peas, 2nd dry beans, 3rd winter squash, 4th peppers, and 5th tomatoes; but it is not just about growing vegetables. Our focus is educating the students on all aspects of sustaining a garden; seed germination, soil preparation, harvesting and composting. To get involved talk to your local PTO or Principal.

The leased plots are managed by Burlington Parks & Recreation. The area contains 20 400 square feet plots plus several ADA accessible smaller raised plots. Any interest in growing your own vegetables, please contact the Recreation Department at 781-270-1695.

The Victory garden is managed by volunteers and everything that is harvested is donated to the People Helping People Food Pantry in Burlington. Over the years, the outcome of the garden has steadily increased. All efforts in the garden is carried out by volunteers, some local residents, but we also get a lot of help from local companies who volunteer in groups. Help is always needed depending on the time of year, it might be watering, planting, weeding, or harvesting. To get involved PM us here, email [email protected] or call the food pantry 781-270-6625.
