Although they look similar, usnea, reindeer lichen, and Spanish moss are different organisms with different uses. Usnea, often called old man’s beard, is a lichen (a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and algae) known in herbal medicine for its antimicrobial compounds, which have been studied for antibacterial, antifungal, and immune-supportive properties and is traditionally used for respiratory and wound-healing remedies. reindeer lichen is also a lichen, but it is primarily known as a food source for animals and is not widely used medicinally. In contrast, Spanish moss is not a lichen at all, but an epiphytic flowering plant in the bromeliad family that grows on trees in the southern United States. It historically it has been used for stuffing, fiber, and crafts.

Cleavers and chickweed are two of my favorite wild spring greens. They pop up right when our bodies are ready for a little seasonal reset. Both herbs are wonderfully supportive for the lymphatic system, helping move stagnant fluid and encouraging gentle detoxification.

Chickweed is cooling, mineral-rich, and nourishing, while cleavers is one of the best traditional herbs for stimulating lymph flow. In herbal practice, their benefits really are most potent when they’re used fresh. juiced, blended, or added into smoothies.

My smoothie today is chickweed, cleavers, mango, pineapple, apple, spinach, and avocado, and garnished with a sprinkle of rose powder, mint leaf and calendula
