Gordon County Farm Bureau had a fun-filled day at Calhoun Primary! The students learned about the different types of farm animals you can find on a farm. They also learned some neat information on beef cattle since May is Beef Month. We owe a huge thank you to Catherine Horton with The Little Red Barn mobile petting zoo. The students were able to experience a hands on opportunity with the animals. Thank you Calhoun Primary for asking us to come back a second year!!!

Happy National Agriculture Day! Why should we celebrate agriculture? Agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis. But too few people truly understand this contribution. This is particularly the case in our schools, where students may only be exposed to agriculture if they enroll in related vocational training. Your participation throughout your community is critical in helping us spread this positive message about agriculture.

Gordon County Farm Bureau partnered with Swain Elementary for a very unique learning experience. All Swain students will get to visit the media center daily for the next twenty-one days to watch as we hatch baby chicks using an incubator provided by Gordon County Farm Bureau. Students will use the provided calendar to see what stage the eggs are in each day until the chicks hatch. Second grade students had the opportunity to listen to Mrs. Kim Witt and Ms. Elizabeth Arnold present information about poultry farming and the life cycle of a chicken on the day the incubator arrived. Thank you Farm Bureau for your generous support!

Program Coordinator Elizabeth Arnold and Young Farmer Chair Kimberly Witt (with Lucy & Ruby) spent the afternoon with 2nd graders at W.L. Swain Elementary teaching the kids how chicken goes from Farm to Table.
The school will have an incubator in the library for everyone to watch! For the next 20 days, they get to check the chicken development calendar to know what stage of development the eggs are in! A special thanks to the Pilgrim's Pride Hatchery for donating the eggs!
