One of our favorite things about teaching a shrub-making class: no two shrubs come out the same.

We recently taught a class at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and started everyone with a little kit of peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, and thyme. From there, people made it their own, some adding figs and cherries from the table, swapping in basil or rosemary, using a little of everything or keeping it simple. Staying inside the box or going outside of it.

And even the chopping and filling of the jars was completely individual. Some casual, some precise, some layered just so. By the end, every jar looked different, and every one was its own little work of art.

It was so fun for us to watch everyone play around and to talk about everything from the history of shrubs to making them at home to where you can find them on menus around Cambridge.

A very good night of tasting, making, experimenting, and talking shrub. Thank you, Cambridge Center for Adult Education, for having us!

What are Pharm Notes? The short answer: they are notes from Jill about the things she’s thinking about, noticing, learning, growing, cooking, et al.

Pharm Notes arrive in your inbox once a month, along with our Love Lists, recipes, things we’re learning and loving, and other notes from Urban Pharm. If that sounds good to you, you can sign up for our newsletter through the link in our bio.

And to everyone who already reads Pharm Notes—and especially those of you who take the time to write back—we are so grateful. We love hearing what resonates, what you’re thinking about, and what you’re up to. It’s more of a conversation, which is exactly what we hoped Urban Pharm would create.

If you love cookbooks, this is one you should know about.

Jill and I both love cookbooks. New ones, old ones—we read them as much as we actually cook from them.

But there’s one I go back to again and again: One Good Dish by davidtanis. It came out in 2013, and it’s still one of my absolute favorites.

Tanis was a longtime chef at Chez Panisse, and the recipes have that same spirit: simple, beautiful food that doesn’t need a lot of fuss to be really delicious.

I also love his A Platter of Figs. And about eight years ago, we took a cooking class with David at Milk Street for my birthday which only made me love him more.

We hope that you pick up a copy and let us know what you make from it!

Jill and her family stumbled upon the utterly delightful Funga Farm by accident, on their way back from a better-known Copenhagen destination spot. Dedicated to growing sustainable hyper local mushrooms for CSA members, restaurants, and chefs, the Funga Farm is clearly about much more than that. On the day they visited, its small urban plot was overflowing not just with all sorts of things growing, but with all sorts of humans in community. A deep belief in the nourishing power not just of food, but the coming together around food— its growing, its cooking, its eating— was everywhere, and they felt wonderfully at home.

Just back from Copenhagen, Jill visited her garden, which was busy doing its thing while they were gone. Lots of eggs and flowers and herbs, plus a mystery melon. She slices into it with us and gives a review. For now, the joy is in the growing! Stay tuned for more melon sampling in the coming weeks! 🍈

Urban Pharm's Gift Ideas for Mother's Day ♥️

Mother’s Day is a good excuse to pause and think about the women in our lives who have cared for us. Whether you’re celebrating a mother, honoring someone who’s been like one to you, remembering, or simply tending to your own heart, we’ve gathered a few things we love and think you will, too. Each one feels special in its own way.

1. Cotton napkins are such a perfect, quiet everyday elevation. Jill recently found these Everyday Napkins at Blanche + Mimi in Portland, Maine. If you don’t use cloth napkins regularly, consider this your signal to start.

2. An amazing candle is always a great gift. We love the Le Feu De L'Eau candle in all of its different scents (we originally found it at the incredible store Good in Beacon Hill and then at our fave Sunshine in Amagansett) and the Flamingo Estate Agrigento Olive Tree candle. Be sure to include a cute box of matches. (We love including one from our favorite restaurant.)

3. Fresh flowers are always beautiful, but we also love hand-made and hand-painted metal flowers from Gusto and paper flowers from John Derian. The craftsmanship is stunning. Anne keeps them around her house and appreciates them every day.

4. Doesn’t every mama need to get shrubby? Try to this delicious Urban Pharm collaboration with Curio Spice (and keep an eye out for another collab flavor coming soon!).

5. For a splurge, this beautiful Heritage Jewelry New York zodiac charm is next level. Both Jill and Anne have one, with birthstones set in the star signs of their children.

6. Jelly shoes! High, Low. Always fun.

7. A beautiful table setting never goes unnoticed. This Felt+Fat 7-Piece Set is well-crafted and joyful.

8. We love Ballerina Farm’s products, especially their Protein Powders and Electrolytes. Everything they make that we've tried is delicious.

Happy Mother’s Day!
XO Anne & Jill
