Food security is a very real concern for many families, especially during winter weather. The AMEN House in Georgetown is an absolute Godsend by providing food and clothing to those in need. These boxes provide fresh fruits and veggies as well as nonperishables. It can be a challenge sometimes to make the produce stretch for large families. Here's an easy recipe for strawberries which are often included in the boxes.
I use store bought pie crust (usually $3-$5) and get about 6-7 pastries. For the glaze, reserve a couple spoonfuls of the strawberry jam mixture and mix with 1cup of powdered sugar, slowly add water, one tablespoon at a time, stirring it in completely before adding more, until desired thickness is reached.
Follow the same recipe for Apple Cinnamon Brown Sugar pastries, but add a little cinnamon to the mixture. Make the glaze the same way with water and powdered sugar, spread on top of pastries, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
Save some mixture to use as strawberry jam (or apple butter) with the bounties of bread also received. Just be sure to keep it refrigerated as it won't be shelf stable unless canned properly.
I'll try to include recipes as often as I can for ideas for families to use their produce and make their meals stretch!

Since I've relocated I've decided to fire up the home bakery again. I still have time to crank out some sweet treats before the storm rolls in. Also have a quick sandwich bread recipe and Mommy's Irish Brown Bread that could be ready by tomorrow. Can meet in the Georgetown area.

Blueberries are a plenty on The Hill! Order blueberry biscuits by the dozen ($24). Also available by special order by the dozen are mini blueberry donuts, blueberry fritters, chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, or any other sweet treat I’m happy to attempt. Homemade fresh baked bread also baked to order. White bread, honey wheat bread, Irish brown bread (all $6/ loaf) and banana nut loaves ($12/loaf). Our granola ($6/pint jar) is also made from our homegrown blueberries and is highly addicting!
