If you want to know why I don’t sell many lavender….this sums it up perfectly! I don’t have the mental capacity to work diligently on more than a few varieties at a time so lavender and black have all of my focus right now! Making it extremely hard for me to share those specific projects, I promise it is not because I am gatekeeping and selfish. It is because I am investing in my program and bettering the birds 💜💜💜
Why do we hoard?
To be clear, It’s not to be a stingy 🫏 🕳️..
The truth ; It comes from multiple places.
Birds are unique, one of a kind and unicorns are rare. Some varieties, they are even fewer and farther between and even more unique.
Accidentally sell the wrong special bird and boom 💥 Hoarder brain unlocked.
When I am working on a project color, I absolutely cannot afford to send my special birds to other people.
Birds die and become infertile. Sell your backup rooster you will quickly be reminded why we don’t do that. And so… we hoard good boys.
Sometimes we hoard because we are competitive. I’ll be honest. I don’t want to show against my own birds. This isn’t just me, this is almost anyone who is a serious competitor.
While it is important to share and collaborate with one another, selling birds and eggs is not the most important part to me. I believe if you are truly in this to create something you must place your own program at the top. Hatch for yourself first, share second.
Overselling all of your eggs, chicks or grow outs can create holes in your program.
And lastly, the hardest one. Some of us hoard and become tight with our birds after seeing them mishandled, misrepresented or resold several times. It’s tough to protect what you have built once it leaves your hands. My own personal process is to always contact the original breeder when a bird doesn’t work out for me. They may pass, but at least Ive done my part and had that honest communication. I’ve allowed them the opportunity to take those birds back if they so choose. You’d be surprised that many breeders are more than willing to take their birds back as they care where they land.
If a breeder shares their years of work with you. ..Know that it’s a piece of their heart, their work, and that they are placing trust in you. 🖤
