Happy Halloween! 🎃 Chances are you’ll find a Dum-Dum pop amongst all the candy, and if you’re lucky it will have a Birthday Cake wrapper 🎂🎂 🎂

Dum-Dum lollipops were invented in Akron 100 years ago by the Akron Candy Company!

If you visit Spangler Candy Company in Bryan, Ohio (Spangler purchased Akron Candy Co in 1953), you’ll spy the town’s giant water tower, featuring 65-foot tall lollipops, way before you get close enough to see Dum-Dum drum man peeking out of the second-story window of Spangler Candy World.

There you’ll find interesting displays of artifacts, timelines, company history, activity booths, a theatre, fun facts about your favorite candies, and of course, lots of goodies for purchase.

So whether you sneak a Dum-Dum from your kid’s Trick or Treat bag this week, or grab one at the next doctor’s visit, know that the sucker in your hand is one of over 6 billion produced by Spangler Candy in 2024 alone! 🥳🤩🎉

And if you find one with a Birthday wrapper, give a nod to Mr Bader and Mr Swartz, who in 1924 working at a candy shop on Sumner Street near the University of Akron (McDonald’s is there now), created the small lollipop that would leave a lasting impression.

The Cleveland Chapter of Les Dames D'escoffier welcomed three dynamic entrepreneurs to our group this weekend with a ceremonial "pinning" ceremony: Tina Chamoun, founder of Terranean Herbs & Spices, Tara Meineke, founder of M-Wine Cellars, and Susan Chapo, founder of Relish Cleveland Tours. The event was hosted by Chef Ky-Wai at the Cuyahoga Community College Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management Center across from beautiful public square in Cleveland. What fun! A 40+ person team outing for Employers Health!

Chris Goff is well known and respected in our community, and by the smiling faces and interaction of his employees, it’s clear the same goes for running his business.

When we approached our venues about the large group size, they didn’t hesitate, but came through strong with top notch experiences AND kept us all on time (not an easy feat).

Gina at Heritage Bistro , being new to our tours having just opened up a few months ago, crushed it too.

Many thanks to Basil Asian Bistro , Canton Palace Theatre , Jay Spencer , Mike's Pizza , WoodshopCanton , and 2Scoopz Ice Cream for providing exceptional service, interacting with our guests and showcasing your venues.

We have exciting news! Downtown Canton was recently chosen by Heritage Ohio as one of five historic Ohio communities that have been selected through a competitive process to participate in a Downtown Assessment Resource Team (DART) Program. This is the first step in becoming an Ohio Main Street Community. The DART Program is a 2-day, deep dive workshop in our community. During this time Heritage Ohio Staff will conduct site visits, community visioning and input modeling, walking tours, and interviews with key community stakeholders to determine if there is a capacity and local support for a full Main Street Program. The Main Street approach was created in the late 1980s as a model for downtown revitalization, preservation, and economic development. It is a nationally respected framework that is followed by over 2,000 communities that value their history and local economy. In Ohio, 52 historic communities are currently part of the Main Street Program!
