A bit of a blurry picture, but an example of the silhouette I like to see on a young February hatch cockerel. There’s length of back, depth of chest, rise in cushion, balance, width across the top and throughout which this picture does not show, good head piece, nice yellow beak, good feather, and my favorite pep peeve high and tight wings held above the thigh. Just a few things to look for in young cockerels.

There is very little more rewarding than when your next generation starts to take shape and you are pleased with what you see. It means that the birds you put together have produced potentially valuable offspring, and the breedings you thought would work have. I often run into the issue of having too many males or females to select from, creating an impossible task of getting offspring from every single potential possibility. It is imperative that you do not overwhelm yourself with possibilities, but instead prioritize your breedings and what should potentially produce the best offspring.

Another week has gone by and another group of chicks out of the incubator. We are almost done hatching for the year, over 600 bantam and large fowl cochins out so far! A couple hundred more and our hatching season will be complete.

I have done some informational videos in the past and would like to do more, what are some questions you have about raising cochins or exhibition poultry in general? Comment your questions or ideas below!

I’ve said this before but one of the things you can notice early on, besides feet, toes, legs, combs, is the head and skull structure! For those raising bantam cochins, I prefer they have a short skull with a high brow, giving a very round appearance and shape when looking at the side profile, when looking over the top the skull should be almost as wide or wider than your thumb at this stage. You should be able to fit a quarter where there eye and brow is. The beak should also be short, stout, and curved. This is the first major thing I begin to cull for as the chicks start to get some age. It is one of my pet peeves that in my opinion can ruin the overall look of a bird if not correct.

These pullets are 10 weeks old for reference.
