So this happened today… 🐣

One Cream Legbar decided the usual head first exit was overrated and went full chaos mode, popping out sideways like she had somewhere to be.

Meanwhile, six fluffy hatchlings are already wobbling, and we’ve got one last egg still holding out.

From wet shrimp to tiny, opinionated fluffballs in a matter of hours… never gets old.

Please be mindful of where you source your backyard eggs.

There is growing advice in online groups promoting the use of EndoCox (toltrazuril/Baycox) to treat coccidiosis in backyard poultry. However, this medication is not FDA-approved for use in poultry in the United States.

One of the biggest concerns is that toltrazuril is known to leave residues in eggs for an extended period of time, potentially lasting months after treatment. Because of this, even in countries where it is approved for poultry, it is generally not used in egg-laying hens or birds intended for human consumption.

Using it off-label in laying hens raises legitimate concerns, as it could lead to ongoing, repeated exposure to drug residues through eggs.

If you keep poultry or purchase eggs locally, it’s worth asking what medications are being used and whether they are appropriate for food-producing birds.

Our chickens have officially discovered spring and are acting like they invented it.

More sunshine, more scratching, more dust baths, and more beautiful eggs. The girls are loving this weather, and it shows.

Just posted photo of a snake on our sidewalk. Someone mentioned the snake getting our birds. I wanted to put your mind at ease if you had the same thought:

We live in the woods, not in a bubble. Wildlife lives here too.

That’s why our chickens are housed in secure covered runs with enclosed coops, hardware cloth, and a buried predator apron system. We do not deal with predators by trying to wipe out wildlife. We deal with predators by making our birds unavailable.

The large snake we saw today was a non-venomous watersnake, not a chicken hunter. He was simply passing through, same as the hawks, owls, raccoons, possums, coyotes, deer, rabbits, and other critters we regularly see.

When you live where we do, you either understand that you are part of an ecosystem or you stay confused. We choose to respect the wildlife and protect our flock properly.

These are our 3 coops and 2100 square foot of covered run

Met a handsome sidewalk noodle today.
My first thought was cottonmouth, but after taking a closer look from a respectful distance, I realized he was a non-venomous banded watersnake (I think - but it's non-venomous either way). A big one too, at least 4 feet long and wide enough to completely cover the sidewalk.

I got some photos, then backed off when he changed direction so he could get back to his original route and continue his mysterious reptile errands.

We see a lot of wildlife out here, and I love it. Hawks, owls, bats, deer, rabbits, raccoons, possums, coyotes, and now Mr. Sidewalk Supervisor. They’re all just doing what wildlife does.

That’s exactly why our chickens live in secure covered runs with serious predator protection. The critters can keep being critters, and my chickens can keep being glorified tiny dinosaurs behind the wire.

I notified the Escambia Extension so they could add it to their snake watch.

Three weeks old and already stepping into the job. We taught our little Cream Legbar cockerel the "big bird" ni**le waterer today and he started teaching the flock right away. Smart, confident, and looking more and more like a future flock leader.
