Remembering + honoring the military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country.

This clipping is over 80 years old.

A young man coming home after two years as an Army infantryman in WWII.
Five campaigns. Five campaigns!

Chef John Rork's father survived.
Many did not.

That is the uncomfortable truth every Memorial Day cookout, parade, + family gathering.

Somebody’s son didn’t come home.
Somebody’s husband.
Somebody’s father.

John grew up spending spring days beside his father, placing flags on servicemen’s graves before Memorial Day.

Not because it was required.

Because you remember the ones who paid the bill for your freedom.

Row after row. Name after name.
Men + women who missed birthdays. First steps. Weddings. They traded their futures for ours.

That is Memorial Day.
Sacrifice.

The kind that echoes through generations.

So, this Memorial Day.

Pause.

Read a name on a headstone.

Tell a story.

Teach a child.

Remember that the freedoms we casually enjoy every single day came at a cost.

And honor the people who paid it.
