We’ve been working on some new skills here in the farm kitchen. I finally made a hard cheese good enough to wax and age!

And, we started grinding grains instead of buying flour. Yesterday, the boys and I used 100% freshly ground grain to make pizza crust, chocolate cake, and pie crust. Today, I made the softest sandwich bread I’ve ever made.

It’s funny how some things that I thought would be easy (like cheese) have been so difficult, and things that I put off because they seemed daunting (like getting soft home ground bread) have been easy. Maybe it’s just me. 😅

Have you tried anything new lately? Was it easier or harder than you expected?

U.S. CATTLE REPORT 📦 U.S. Beef Imports on Record Pace, Topping 3.4 Billion Pounds Through July 🚢🥩

Through July, the U.S. has imported 3.4 billion pounds of beef, up 30.3% from the same period last year. Brazil was the largest supplier at 810 million pounds, up 91.5%, followed by Australia at 719 million pounds, up 34.8%. Canada shipped 555 million pounds, down 3.5%, while New Zealand sent 398 million pounds, up 3.0%, and Mexico contributed 367 million pounds, up 9.8%. Uruguay totaled 249 million pounds, up 44.8%, Nicaragua supplied 103 million pounds, up 10.3%, and Argentina shipped 72 million pounds, up 41.7%. The largest percentage increase came from Paraguay, which delivered 94 million pounds, up 616% from a year ago.

I’m preparing for a fun sourdough class. I need your help!

-Have you tried making sourdough? What problems or questions have you had?
-What would you most like to make besides the standard round artisan loaf?
-If you haven’t tried, what’s stopping you?

Here’s today’s loaf. It’s a little dark because I forgot it in the oven again. Still getting used to my new old stove. 😁

How cool!

Maple is part of the team at MSU’s Pollinator Performance Center doing critical pollinator research and education. A retired police K-9, she uses her super sense of smell to detect bacteria in bee colonies to help prevent disease from spreading.

Currently, beekeepers must manually inspect colonies for disease, but dogs like Maple can identify disease much faster, which could make a big impact on the industry.

This project is one of many occurring at the Pollinator Performance Center. Operating since 2021, the center allows MSU to be at the forefront of honeybee and other pollinator research.
