FALL OPENING IS HERE!
SUNDAY 9/13
NOON TO 4 PM CENTRAL
After today, it looks like our weather is finally cooling and my mums are just starting to crack color! We've been picking pumpkins throughout the weekend and week as we have time, and the broom corn finally has its nice big droopy heads! Ornamental corn ears are beginning to dry and I'll be picking those as they ripen as well.
I have perennial asters starting to bloom, plus a few sunflowers and millet. Jack O Lanterns are typically later to ripen, so I'll have those available as I find them.
I will be open next weekend 9/19 and 9/20 as well! After this Sunday, I'll be available by appointment as well if you cant make the weekends work!

🎃MUM AND PUMPKIN UPDATE!
Since this summer has been so hot, the mums aren't blooming at their scheduled time. The pumpkins are growing, with a little extra water, despite the drought.
I'm hoping within the next week or 2, I'll be open for the fall! I also have some perennial asters and a few other goodies!
Mums are day-length and temperature sensitive. They won't trigger their blooms until the nights get a little cooler, but were losing daylight pretty quickly so it shouldn't be too much longer!

🚫🌽NO SKRETTEBERG SWEET CORN THIS YEAR 😥😥
Due to a few different unfortunate events, we had a complete crop failure of both plantings of our sweet corn. We will NOT have corn at the Grant County Fair like usual. Or anywhere else 😥
Catch us again next year!

Tips:
Wide mouth jars can fit more flowers!
You can bring as many jars as you want, you'll be charged $15 per jar.
Wear close toed shoes, it is uneven terrain covered with landscape fabric.
Bring you phone! Take lots of photos, post them on social media and tag me in them!!
The dahlias aren't in full bloom yet, so I'm planning to also have dates throughout August and September (until frost) to enjoy them fully!

LONG TIME NO TALK!
On July 8th we welcomed our sweet baby Theodore into our family, since then I've spent my time soaking up newborn snuggles and wrangling a rowdy toddler.
Its been an insanely hot July with nearly 9 days in a row reaching 105 and mostly 95+ degree days.That being said, my flowers are showing off! But I don't have any time to make bouquets. My husband has been busy wrangling weeds, and those weeds are crazy.
Who would be interested in $15 You-Pick afternoons/evenings? Bring your own mason jar and pruners or scissors, I've got the water. For $15 per Mason jar you can pick as much as you can fit. Not everything looks perfect, the grasshoppers are chewing up some leaves and things. But I really hope all our hard work wasn't for nothing!

NATIONAL POLLINATOR WEEK!
One of my big passions is native plants (AKA wildflowers or range land plants) and I'm loving posting weekly updates of whats blooming and learning new plant ID. So heres what I found this week! If you're looking for native plants, I'll have more for sale this fall when I'm open for mums, pumpkins and porch decor!
🐍Narrowleaf Purple Coneflower 'Echinacea angustifolia' Skippers rely on this plant as a host species, Lewis and Clark sent samples to Thomas Jefferson from Fort Mandan! Natives used it as a rattlesnake remedy.
🪲Prairie Coneflower 'Ratibida pinnata' great cut flower, insect and pollinator magnet
🦋Common Milkweed 'Asclepias syriaca' host plant for Monarch butterflies!
🪨Silverleaf scurf-pea 'Pediomelum argophyllum' silvery foliage brings contrast to the landscape and offers a rare blue flower!
🏵Plains Yellow Primrose 'Oenothera serrulata' blooms during the day, rather than other primrose which bloom at night, drought tolerant
🌿Marbleseed 'Onosmodium bejariense' deep taproom makes it suitable for rocky areas, somewhat rare in nature
🌼Scarlet Globemallow 'Sphaeralcea coccinea' provides food for herbivores, has many traditional medicinal uses

MID-JUNE FLOWER FIELD UPDATE
🌸Many of my favorite filler flowers are getting going, like yarrow, feverfew, statice, and calendula. But with my ranunculus and anemones not performing great I'll be waiting on the zinnias, rudbeckia, and dahlias to show up for bouquets. Peonies all blew open too fast during our heat wave as well.
🎃Pumpkins are getting nice and big! I'm especially excited for the black, white, carmel, and pink colored ones!
We need some good heat to kick things off and in a couple weeks, things will be in full swing!
It's my first year growing flowers at this scale, so its a learning curve. Plus, it will take a year or so for more of my perennials and shrubs to get established. After that I will be able to have cut flowers all summer long, starting in May!

PRAIRIE BLOOMS THIS WEEK
🌵Plains Prickly Pear 'Opuntia polyacantha' a native cactus with edible pads and fruit...behind this cactus is a large patch of Poison Ivy 😅😅
🕷Western Spiderwort 'Tradescantia occidentalis' one purple flower in each bunch blooms every day, very drought tolerant
🪾Wavyleaf Thistle 'Cirsium undulatum' A NATIVE thistle and NOT A NOXIOUS W**D! This thistle is a beneficial plant for pollinators, root used by Native Americans to treat stomachache and diabetes, plant used to treat gonorrhea and syphilis, and tea of leaves used to induce fever

🪴Soapweed 'Yucca glauca' extremely drought tolerant and provides nesting material for native bees
🌸Wild Four O'Clock 'Mirabilis nyctaginea' flowers open at 4 pm for nighttime pollinators and Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, they are a host for the Sphinx Moth
🌻Prairie Sunflower 'Helianthus petiolaris' a keystone species providing pollen for insects, nectar for insects and birds, hosts insects that feed birds, and produces seed to feed birds and ground animals
