This drone video was taken last Sunday and does a great job of capturing two of our six Choppers in action on a 70-acre field North of the farm. It is amazing to see how much feed can be processed by two of these machines, and even more incredible when all six machines end up in one large field harvesting 72 rows in a single pass.

Favorable conditions at the time of this video allowed us to keep the Choppers spread out in different directions, with two teams of two Choppers and two Choppers running solo in smaller fields. This helps to even the delivery rate of feed to the storage area, As while some of the Teams are busy with the slower process of starting fields, others are at full production as they work on an already started field.

We are thankful for the beautiful Crop, the hard-working, talented and devoted Team that has worked tirelessly to gather the crop, and the large lineup of modern machinery that makes this job possible.

Sunday night into Monday we received nearly 2 1/2 inches of rain, which has slowed harvest production down. The rain has made it necessary to use dump carts to transfer the crop out of the fields and to the trucks that transport the harvested feed to the pile. Even with the rains, the progress has still been excellent, and at the start of harvest this morning (day nine) more than 90,000 tons of high-quality Feed had already been placed onto the pile.

With rains predicted this afternoon and tonight, we will have to wait and see if we are able to chop tomorrow or if it's simply going to be too wet.

Still several days to go, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Have a fantastic Friday, everyone!

It was fantastic to see this morning's beautiful sunrise coming up over the feed pile!

Corn harvest has been on rain delay since Monday night, but the Team will be hard at it again today as they resume harvest - Today will be day seven.

The Harvest Team made some great progress last week, and by the time the rain shut us down Monday night, more than 70,000 tons of high-quality corn silage had been harvested and placed into storage. This puts us nicely over the halfway mark. The harvest will be slowed somewhat, as wet fields are requiring the use of dump carts. Unfortunately, with more rain predicted for the weekend, we have no choice but to move forward and get as much of the crop harvested as is possible before the next rains arrive.

As of this morning, the pile had grown to 32' high, 750' long, and 220' wide.

The silage is run across a scale as it enters the feed storage area, allowing us to closely monitor how many pounds of feed are brought in each hour. This number is then put through an equation to calculate how many pounds of tractor we need to be running on the silage pile to ensure adequate compaction. As of today, 12 tractors and one bulldozer, Weighing in at a combined weight of 920,000 pounds are being used to pack and shape the pile, ensuring a great finished product.

It is amazing how much science and math is used to calculate the proper shape and density of a feed pile!

Beautiful weather and cooperative machinery are allowing our Team to make great progress on the corn harvest. Today’s video was captured at about 6:30 on Thursday evening and caught some of the harvest action back at the ever-growing silage pile.

As of the end of the day Thursday, some 23,500 tons of prime quality corn had been placed into storage, which equates to about 17% of our goal . We added a 6th chopper on Friday, which made for a very productive day!

We also have installed a camera that captures real time video of the activities at the pile. You can now watch the harvest process live by using this link https://kfi-harvest-2026.click2stream.com/

We hope everyone has a Super Saturday, and a wonderful weekend!

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, flags at the Farm are flying at half-mast today.

Now called Patriots Day, this national observance is held annually to remember the nearly 3000 people that were killed on that horrible day, as well as to honor the sacrifices of the first responders and military personnel that responded to this horrendous act of violence.

Just like on that terrible day 25 years ago, the beautiful sunny skies gave no indication of the horrors that would soon take place.

At the end of the day today, we will be 2 1/2 days into the corn harvest. Day one (Tuesday), was cut very short due to some late morning rains that put a stop to all fieldwork.

Things have gone very smoothly thus far, with 5- 12 row choppers keeping a steady stream of silage flowing into the storage area, and 11 pack tractors and 1 bulldozer pushing and packing the fresh feed into a beautiful pile.

The pile has grown to be 180 feet wide by 600 feet long and about 7 feet tall at this point, and it has become impossible to catch a picture of all of the action taking place from ground level - we will need to take a moment to get some drone action very soon!

Beautiful sunny skies and light winds are allowing for excellent progress, but the weather is also telling us that we need to pick up the pace of harvest to ensure that all corn is harvested at peak quality. To that end, we will be adding a sixth chopper to the lineup tomorrow.

As of the end of the day Wednesday, Some 12,500 tons of high-quality forage had been delivered into storage, putting us on pace to reach our goal of harvesting 500 acres of 25 ton forage each day.

Hope everyone had a chance to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather!

Happy Thursday, Everyone!

And the winner is...

The start of corn silage harvest is always an exciting time of the year. Everybody on the Team is fully aware of how much work lies ahead as we labor to get the crop chopped, processed, trucked to storage, pushed and packed onto the pile, and then sealed from the elements with two layers of plastic and tire sidewalls. Even with all the work that lies ahead over the next couple of weeks, the Team is always excited to see the harvest begin and have the opportunity to evaluate the fruits of their Spring and Summer labors.

One of the more interesting contests that we experience each year is seeing how competitive the different Chopper Teams are on trying to be the first load of silage to be delivered to the feed pad. This year was nearly a tie, with Travis from DeNoble Enterprises coming in at 10:13 am on Tuesday, and Luke from Ag Transportation coming in within one minute of the original truck. Better luck next year, Luke!

If all goes well over the next two weeks, our six choppers will deliver around 5,000 truckloads of prime quality feed to the Feed Center, harvested from 5,250 acres. This is a monumental task, and we are Thankful to the wonderful people who willingly work the long days to gather the crop.

Day One (Tuesday) was a little bit shorter day due to some rain that moved in, but today the weather, machines and the people have fallen into a comfortable rhythm, and the harvest is going very well!

What a wonderful time of the year this is!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, everyone!

Happy Labor Day!

Here on the farm, Labor Day often aligns with corn silage harvest. The rains we received over the last week have brought the moisture back up on the silage, slightly delaying harvest. Today the Farming Team is busy checking individual fields to determine perfect moisture content and cob maturity, which is used to predict harvest timing. This task is accomplished using 2 gas engine powered wood chippers mounted directly on pickup trucks to grind 5 stalks from each field, and then analyze the samples for moisture content using two mobile John Deere harvest labs mounted in each of the trucks. The lab can produce moisture results in under a minute, which is important for us, as the Team will analyze more than 270 fields and 6000 acres of corn this fall. Cob maturity is also visually assessed at the same time. This data is then entered into a spreadsheet, allowing us to predict when each field should be harvested to achieve peak quality cow chow for our girls. Judging by the results thus far, it looks as though tomorrow may be the start of our 14 day harvest. The days will be long, but we are excited to begin!

Have a Magnificent Monday Everyone!

It’s been another busy but very productive week here at the farm. In addition to the usual daily activities of caring for our girls and our land, summertime usually is accompanied by a long list of field improvement and building projects. Quite often these projects are completed and are not all that noticeable as you drive by the farm. One of this week’s projects is little bit easier to recognize, as the addition of this project has changed the skyline at one of our milking parlors.

Over a year in the making, this project took a big step forward this week as we took delivery of and installed two milk silos to replace our current direct load to semi tanker system. There’s still an additional couple of weeks worth of work to get them all hooked up, but we were able to capture the arrival of the silos and the cranes in action as the silos were lifted into place and fastened down, thanks to a time-lapse camera.

Pretty neat to see two days worth of work boiled down into a 30 second video!

A huge Thank You to all who were involved in moving this project ever closer to completion!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Work Hard, Play Hard!

Our Farm Team performs at a very high level - each and every day they bring their best to ensure only the best for our girls.

In their free time, many of our Team Members are active in various sporting events, and they tend to enjoy bringing their "A" game to these events as well. We look forward to watching and cheering on several of our Team Members this Saturday at one such event, as they will be participating in the second annual Wisconsin Dairy Soccer Team Tournament. It is certain to be a fun filled day, and we are wishing them, and all teams, the best of luck.

Last year the Kinnard Farms team played their hearts out and were rewarded with the Championship trophy! Not an easy win as the teams they played against were also quite good and very competitive.

If you have the opportunity and you want to see some great athletes in action, the games are open to all and start at 10 AM at the Ryan County Park and Soccer Complex.

A huge Thank You to the great Dairy Supply companies that organize and sponsor this great event. Thank You to Zoetis, AllTech and GPS Dairy Consulting.

You know where we'll be on Saturday! Best of luck to all Teams!

Peek-a-boo!

The great growing season is making it hard to spot our three 360Rain autonomous applicator units in the fields as they quietly go about their business of recycling rainwater collected from our 25 acres of feed storage pads.

Planning and permitting this project, installing the units, building and installing the pipelines necessary to transport the water to fields, and installing the pumping equipment and electrical service to these pumps involved a LOT of time, work and expense - but we are extremely happy with the results!

In the two years we've been running these units, thousands of truckloads of water have been removed from the roads. In addition, the ability to provide water in small precise doses when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate has helped to boost plant health and forage quality.

The ability to water a cover crop immediately after planting has been an unanticipated bonus.

Viewing a problem as a potential opportunity is a great way to go through life. This installation has definitely proven to be an opportunity!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, everyone!
