Happy Birthday to Opal and Barney's pups! πŸ₯³πŸ§πŸŽ‰πŸŽˆ

The actual birthdays for the puppies were May 4th and May 5th, but we were on vacation, visiting family out of state, so I didn't have a chance to update.

It's hard to believe it was already an entire year ago that we had the litter of puppies and connected with many of you! It was a wonderful experience. We have no plans to breed again in the near future, as the parent dogs are now spayed and neutered, but maybe we will someday down the road.... We've been impressed by the Great Bernese cross. They are special dogs and deserve more attention.

At 1 year, Rufus is both sweet and gentle and has a little attitude! There are pros and cons to both choices, but we appreciate the benefits of waiting until greater maturity before neutering, so we're navigating typical teen boy hormones with Rufus 🀣 He's usually a calm boy, thankfully.

Please feel free to include pictures and one-year updates on the pups! We love to see them. (This will be Our last regular pup update post.)

Have a wonderful spring!

It is garden season again on the homestead! πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰

I've started seedlings for years, but this is my first year using anything other than a sunny window. Grow lights have made a positive difference with the size and growth of my seedlings!

We have a trip planned for next week, so i started my seedlings a little later to accommodate our schedule. But my hardneck garlic is all sprouted and happy! I sowed seeds for a few varieties of cold weather greens and herbs the other day. It feels great to get my hands in the dirt again. 🌱

Happy 11 months to Rufus and his littermates! One more month until they reach a year. We love seeing the updates, and how all the pups are happy and thriving. 😊

Has everyone's guarding instincts kicked in yet? Rufus is taking his guardian duties seriously now. We've been working a lot with him this month, as far as staying away from the road. He's definitely getting wiser about it, but he's not quite as trustworthy as his parents yet. The local nesting vultures that return to our area every spring, have made their appearance again this week. Opal is teaching Rufus to chase them away, like any any respectable livestock guardian dog ought to 😏 meanwhile Barney looks on with polite interest, from his comfy resting position. It is interesting how the most livestock guardian breeds are instinctively conscious of any threats coming from the sky!

I hope everyone is enjoying the early spring weather, and these big fluffy dogs aren't getting TOO muddy from being outside in all the rain! 😏

We've been boiling sap at Autumn Berry Farm! It's been kind of a spotty year for us as far as sap production (This crazy up and down weather?!), but it's always a fun tradition for our family! 🌳🍁πŸ₯ž

Dickens the cat and Opal are being very helpful today with sap gathering.

The puppies are 10 months old today! Only two more months of updates! Rufus is probably close to reaching his full height at this point, and we have no idea how much he weighs currently, but my guess would be around 110 lb. His personality is really starting to come out. He's not quite so lazy all the time. He's learning to be a livestock guardian dog (basically, barking when his mom barks, and patrolling the yard). Most of Rufus's guardian duties involve sitting on top of the giant snow pile in the driveway and surveying his domain, while chewing on some item that he stole from the garage. He's tested his boundaries a little bit as far as staying in the yard this month, but he's been responding well to training.

His other favorite activity is playing with Dickens the kitten and keeping an eye on the rabbit through the fence. And he just loves taking snowy walks in the woods with Opal and Barney!

Feel free to post 10-month puppy pictures and updates in the comments, we love seeing them!

It may be cold and snowy still, but the chickens are laying eggs again! They're enjoying the warmer February sunbeams. I'm sure they can't wait for bare ground to surface....

Look at the colors on these eggs! 🀩

Happy 9 months to Barney and Opal's puppies!

We are trying to survive the cold weather. Rufus, Opal and Barney are the only ones truly enjoying it. Rufus's coat is very thick and wavy! Rufus has found his voice in earnest and is enjoying learning guardian duties from Mom, while Barney lies on the big snow pile and looks on in quiet admiration 😁

Hope all is well with you as we move into February!

Happy 8 months to the (giant) pups! Rufus, Opal and Barney had a fun Christmas, playing in the snow, chewing on beef marrow bones, and play wrestling constantly 🀣 Rufus spends a lot of time growing. He's officially over 100 lbs now. He outgrew his Tractor Supply dog house and Daniel had to build him a new custom made dog house! We are starting to see parallels between Rufus and Clifford the Big Red Dog 😏

Hope you all had a peaceful holiday season and happy new year!
