Emily the Strange has crept into the shop!

19-year-old me would cry knowing we now have a shop carrying the very character and book that inspired me in so many ways.

I loved everything about Emily. She reminded me that it was okay to be strange. The book itself is also an incredible work of graphic art. The illustrations are deceptively simple, but so impactful. The pages play with matte and gloss finishes that give the black-on-black graphics a depth you really have to see in person to appreciate. I would get lost in all those nuances.

This book was one of the first things that made me really appreciate graphic art and understand how much you can communicate through a colors, simple shapes, and typography. It inspired me to pursue graphic art of my own, and Emily’s cat posse was actually the primary inspiration behind Spooky Cat’s logo.

It feels incredible to have Emily the Strange sitting on the shelves of my own shop when so much of my younger self was inspired by her. Come rediscover and fall in love Emily again, a girl who plays by her own rules and searches to be lost.

It’s Spooky Cat’s 6th Birthday!
Here’s a trip down memory lane. If you’ve been with us from the beginning, we can’t even express how grateful we are to you for all the years of support and love!
If you’re new to Spooky Cat Press, we’re an artist-owned & operated brand. We started as a not-so-successful Etsy shop selling Halloween cards in 2015, decided to pivot, spent a few years developing our art, learning photography & about e-commerce, and relaunched on Shopify on August 24, 2020.

It was a weird time. Instagram was vastly different, and because of lockdowns and social distancing, people were shopping online and sending each other lots of cards. We started as a home-based business, moved into a co-working office suite, and last October, we opened a storefront. In December, we moved our entire operation into our current location. We are still mourning the loss of our old, spacious fulfillment space, but now we have an amazing store that we can decorate as the seasons change.

We’re spooky all year, but we change with every season. Six years have passed in the blink of an eye. Most of our days are consumed by Spooky Cat as we create the art, photography, web design, and marketing, and now run a storefront too. We’ve met so many friends through this business, established roots here in Orlando, and are surrounded by people who love all the same spooky things we do. Our small team can pack a whole lot of orders, move a whole lot of boxes, and decorate like our lives depend on it.

Thank you for six years of growth and support. Will we last another six?? Only time will tell. 💀
