Mulch can change the way a bed holds water, feeds soil, and handles heat 🌿 A few simple notes:
🪵 Wood chips are great around shrubs, trees, paths, and longer-term beds
🌾 Straw works well around vegetables and strawberries
🍂 Shredded leaves are one of my favorites for feeding soil over time
⚫ Black plastic can warm soil, but it can also overheat in summer
🪨 Gravel is better for paths or dry-loving plants, not rich veggie beds
I like choosing it based on the job I need it to do, not just what looks tidy. The right mulch makes watering easier and helps protect the soil underneath.
