The bees are doing wonders for my garden this year!
The deer however are not! Last year I had a dinky little 4 foot fence around my garden that I threw together and just hoped for the best. This year I moved my garden to my old pig pen and naturally assumed deer wouldn’t be an issue again. Fence is the same height ,it’s closer to the house what could go wrong? I assumed.. that’s where I went wrong. Last weekend I trimmed back my pumpkin vines that were shading my bush beans and beets. The next morning the resident doe with her 2 fawns decided to have a snack and they have come back every night since. WTF
Now I know I’ll need a much taller fence and or some Hotwire around the whole garden.
I also now realize how much our Caucasian Shepherd Achilles actually warded off ALL of the things, hooved, pawed and 2 legged. He’s no longer with us unfortunately and I will forever miss him being scary to all of the things but his people, especially his momma.
My small win from this long post is that knock on wood and prayers to the garden gods that they have left my pumpkins, squash, zucchini and tomatillos alone and I hope they continue to. I had high hopes this year for my garden but next year I will prevail and be flipping off the resident deer while I’m at it!
