Over the past few weeks I’ve been asking y’all questions on what you do or why. In hopes to start conversations for other producers to see a different way to do things, I’m asking questions you may think everyone already knows or that seem obvious but I truly believe if you’ve been raising cattle 6 months or 60 years there is always something you can learn so this week’s question is do you treat animals or cull them? We face tons of issues when raising animals, pinkeye, hood rot, respiratory issues and on and on. Do you treat these issues or do you cull the animals that have them? No right or wrong answer, but where do you draw the line?

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence. But that doesn’t mean you don’t want it! Is she resourceful? An overachiever? Or just a diva that wants what she’s not supposed to have?…. I’m going with diva.

I have another debatable question for you today. Disposition, it was important enough to be one of the six essentials but how important is it in your herd? And is it a trait the animal is born with or do you think its a product of how it’s interacted with? Or other words do you think you can change a cow’s attitude? The older I get and more my young kids help, it becomes more important in our operation, we are definitely Team Cow Petter as the Market place guys would say!

Have you ever put something in the oven and forget to set the timer? I’m pretty sure she’s done cooking, but I’ve said that for the last few days

We have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of good producers over the past year. I’m just curious on what is the one trait, EPD or characteristic that you are trying to add to your cattle? Not to say that your herd is lacking in that area but what are you wanting to improve on? Higher weaning weights, fertility, phenotype, carcass quality? There is no wrong answer, I’m just curious to see where everyone’s focus is at

Yesterday was eventful, old 437 was off having her calf and we made a few laps around the place at different points in the day trying to locate her with no luck. Only to find LL MISS DEUCE 151 had unexpectedly just dropped one out of the oven, still steaming. With that exciting development I checked the last place to look and there was old 437, down in the bottom of the creek with her own new addition. Always exciting and another reason spring is my favorite time of year.

Genetics and feed efficiency go along way… this group got bred a little later than we wanted them to, but when you have a neighbor like Mr. Powell and he asked to borrow your bull… You do it even if it puts your girls behind schedule. You mix that with Gambling on when to root plow and a pretty bad drought and it a wonder these girls look as good as they do. But this 106 cow from Ensor Beefmasters did pretty good with nothing to eat and even cooked up the nice heifer out of our Blau bull “Kash” and should be another excellent example of the type of cattle we are trying to produce

The old saying is if you love something, set it free…. Well this isn’t really that, but these outstanding L BAR heifers are off to get a few straws dropped in them. They have had lots of miles in a trailer over the last week but they can rest after we get them bred!
