So here’s another post that is not meant to stir anyone up or cast shade on anyone producer or sales organization. ( and I ask that if you do choose to respond to this that you keep the producer and the sale anonymous, this is not to shame anyone but again offer up real life expectations and experiences .) But how many of you that have bought a super fancy slicked up fat heifer from a specialty sale are truly happy with that purchase a year later? Or let me rephrase that to, how many are truly disappointed with that purchase ? Now when I ask that, I’m not talking about she’s not eat out of your hand gentle. But more along the lines of, did she breed at all? She didn’t produce any milk? Did she have an issue like mastitis? Did she fall apart on range conditions? Did she die? How many have stayed in your herd ? And if you kept them did you do so because you thought it was just an off year, just bad luck, maybe she will do better next year? Or did you just spend to much money and can’t except the financial loss? Or if she did ok , did you honestly treat her like the rest of your cattle? Or was she brought up close to the house and fed better than the others? Or another way to put it… in our pursuit of more money, more prestige, more notoriety in the cattle business are we actually producing cattle the don’t actually work? Have we gone or are we going to far?
