Hello friends, I need some good leads. One of the does my son has picked out for fair has decided to dry up. So now we are on the hunt for one to replace her. If you have leads for REGISTERED Nigerian dwarf doe please let me know.

She needs to be in milk for August fair.
Ideally one from good milk lines.
Must need ADGA registered
Must be polled or disbudded.

Please send me what you have available with prices. If you are open to trading we have Meishan pigs (both registered breeders and feeders) available.

This girl has really taken to her dairy goat project. She’s milking (or helping me milk) twice a day every day. She is dutifully taking all of the goats on walks teaching them how to lead. She is used to cattle, so isn’t phased by their nonsense one bit! I can’t imagine what she would be like if we hadn’t moved to the farm…

We have needed to move cows for the past two weeks, but we have had soooo much rain! The next place they were getting moved was our front yard, so we could let that become a muddy mess. Now the grass is as tall as they are and they are in HEAVEN!

We only moved the show cows into the front yard. The others are in the pasture still because they like to hog the treats meant for well behaved cows. 😂 we’re a few weeks away from nationals, and the kids are getting excited!

Peaceful vibes, right? Well, it was….bit after this photo the cow got spooked.

I got trampled, but managed to hold onto the cow. She also didn’t hurt my daughter. Just me. I now have a pretty colorful foot complete with a broken toe.

Doesn’t look like I’ll be showing next week after all….

The past month I’ve been really stressing over the kids showing the cattle. They haven’t been working with them from what I could tell. I actually refused to register for the show in 2 weeks because they weren’t working then, but my husband overruled me.

My son insisted he worked with them all the time, but he never told us when (which is a rule). This morning he sent me photos of him walking the animals.

He’s even been training our bull! He’s determined he’s going to show him at nationals this year.

This year we have sold FIVE meishans to 4h kids to show this year. If you include the pigs my kids will be showing there will be at least 9 pigs shown at fairs. (I say at least because I don’t know how many we’re talking to the open show yet)

4 will be shown at a fair in Indiana. At least five will be shown at the Hartford Fair here in Ohio. I know Meishan aren’t your typical show pig, but I love seeing others wanting to show them in the show ring.

This photo was taken Tuesday when we delivered the final one to its new home.

I know I haven’t been very present in this space, and I will do better. April was just…..HARD. I am so glad that it is over.

My son ended up with a wound from a farm accident. It got infected and landed him in the hospital for 5 days, and 3 weeks of antibiotics after he was released. It was a lot.

It was also our first time experiencing goats kidding season. We had 3 does give birth. We ended up with 8 total. (7 boys and 1 girl)

One of the does had 3 kids, and they must have been early. They were TINY. She abandoned them, so we had 3 babies to feed every 2-3 hours. Two passed, and the remaining one we fed through a syringe because it was so tiny. Then he was growing rapidly.

The whole time I was milking his mom twice a day. After a week my daughter decided to put the baby on the stanchion to see if he’d nurse, and he did! We stuck the two of them in a dog crate overnight, and checked every 3 hours to make sure she was feeding him. She was, so we no longer had a bottle baby!

This week I started milking one doe twice a day because her babies are going to a new home this weekend. So we have our first quart of goat milk! Sunday I will have 4 goats we’ll be milking, so it is sure to add up.

Now we’re in crunch time for preparing for the first cattle show of the year. We are behind schedule, but that seems to always be the case.

Needless to say I’m looking forward to a new month.

I think it’s safe to say that Meishans do pretty well in the cold! This litter arrived on the coldest day (Feb 1), and have shown to be quite the resilient litter.

We have 3 boars and 5 gilts that are still unclaimed. The boars are already quite big, and all have full socks. We will be castrating in about a week, so if you are looking for a boar (or gilt) be sure to message me to get info on how to reserve one.

This litter is Imperial Toby x Imperial Lucy. It was a litter of 14. This is their second litter. Their previous litter is growing quite nicely, and exceeding our expectations! (So much that I’m worried we’ll have 400 lb pigs at fair 😬)

Upcoming litters:

March: Imperial Toby x Holden Oversoul Goosey. First litter was 12

April: Longsought Jojo x Meishan Preservation Lily. This litter will have a LARGE percentage of USDA foundation genetics

This weekend made me seriously question my life choices. This cold is brutal (thankful it has warmed up for a few days)! Since it was so cold we kept the calf and momma in the barn until we needed it for our sow (she was initially supposed to farrow in the backyard, but…. The cold was too harsh).

The day we had to play musical chairs with the animals we discovered that the cold made the ground freeze so much that it went below our pipes going to the freeze free hydrant. This causesd us (my husband mainly) to carry 75 gallons of water by hand to so the animals. Problem was the house bib outside burst a few years ago, and we never fixed it, so we had to fix that first instead of setting up the heating we needed for piglets.

The piglets came on their due date Feb 1 which happened to be the coldest day. I checked at 3 am and one was born. We stayed up until about 6 am trying to keep them warm.
(You can see stream in one picture coming off mom and the piglets) the heating we had wasn’t sufficient. Thankfully our neighbor came and lent us one of his heaters, and helped out together the piglet area(this was supposed to be done when we had to fix hose bib). We also bought an additional two heat lamps (for a total of 5) in order to get the area warm enough.

Even with everything the babies didn’t want the heat lamps and went to momma instead. We tried moving momma’s nest with fresh bedding, but she just made her original one bigger, so we moved heat lamps to cover her too.

In total we had 14 piglets born. As of right now we have 9 surviving. We honestly thought we’d lose them all! I would rotate piglets in the house with heating pads. If I hadn’t done that we would have lost more.

We will never be farrowing in Winter again.
