THAT’S A WRAP ON THE 2026 PLANTING SEASON!

576 roots in the ground between Wednesday and Sunday… and lucky us, our order came with a bonus root!

With temperatures in the mid-80s, this week was all about hard work, staying hydrated, and checking off those rows one root at a time. Thankfully, today we had an extra set of hands to help get the final 75 in the ground, making that last push go a whole lot faster! 🙌

Now it’s time for these beauties to settle in, rest through the winter, strengthen their roots, and wait for their big spring debut.

We’re tired, we’re a little sun-kissed, and we’re already dreaming about what’s to come. Every root planted is another step toward growing something special here at Hidden Peony.

A huge thank you to everyone who has cheered us on along the way. We can’t wait to see what next season brings! 🫶🏼

Now… time to put our feet up for a minute. 😉

Our fall expansion happens a little differently than most.

We start by mowing the area down, spraying it with herbicide, allowing the grass to die off, and then mowing everything down tight. Each row is designed to hold 100 roots of each variety.

We mark every planting location using a 3-foot staggered layout marked with spray paint to create the spot for each planting hole to be dug.

Doug fires up the hand auger and begins digging every hole to our desired depth.

Then comes the tedious part and honestly, one of our favorite parts.

We grab a bag of peony roots and place a 3–5 eye root beside each hole. Then the fun begins… 🌱

Every root is hand planted to ensure the proper planting depth, and we carefully crown the soil above the root to protect it through the winter.

Once we get the next 575 roots planted, we’ll turn our attention to the peonies that were already on the property when we purchased it. We’ll begin splitting those established plants and moving some of them into an area we’ve designated as our variety row.

We’re being very intentional with our field layout. Every variety is carefully marked on our field guide so we know exactly what we planted, where it’s located, and most importantly where the colors we want will eventually be growing.

We’ve been asked what our primary colors will be.

We’re sitting at approximately 90% pink and 10% white.

But… Doug had to make one exception. 😂

He picked up 50 First Out roots because he absolutely loves the deep red flowers they produce.

575 more to go.

And just like that, another piece of the field starts coming to life.

We’re not just planting peonies. We’re building something we can be proud of for years to come.

575 MORE ROOTS filled the car!

Today we picked up the newest additions to the Hidden Peony family from our friends at Swedish Touch Peony Farm in Hamburg, IA and we couldn’t be more excited!

There’s something pretty special about being able to source our roots right here in Iowa. Supporting another local peony farm while growing our own little piece of Iowa peony country just feels right.

And now… it’s time to get to work.

With 575 more roots joining the 200+ we already planted, we’ve officially got some serious dirt work ahead of us. The next few weeks are going to be BUSY around Hidden Peony!

So if you need to get ahold of us… you know where to find us.
Head on over to Hidden Peony and bring some gloves with you. 😉

The plot is getting bigger. The dream is growing. And we’re just getting started. Watch for more updates soon as we tackle a project this size!

Where are the blooms?

Peonies don’t bloom year round, they have a short window in the Spring where they like to show off.

It may appear to be the “offseason,” but there’s nothing quiet about it around here… it’s all about w**d control 🌱 Hours upon hours spent pulling, clearing, and caring so these beauties can grow strong and show up their best when it matters most.

Ps…I’ve had a few questions about shirts, we have long and short sleeve tees still available—message me to grab yours! Sand (short sleeve), Heather gray (long sleeve), Olive Drab (long sleeve) and Steele Gray (long sleeve active wear).

The warmer weather over the last week has kept us busy; cutting anywhere between 25-75 stems a day.

It’s fulfilling seeing and hearing the joy the flowers are bringing others. So fulfilling that we have two more bouquets going out the door!

As the blooming season comes to a close, we recognize the love of peonies that others share along with us! We are already planning ahead and looking forward to next year.

There’s no such thing as too many peonies… only not enough time to enjoy them all 🌸

These blooms you’re seeing? They’re from our well-established plants; the ones that have had years to grow, settle in, and really show off.

But the ones we’ve just planted? They’re still getting started. Still building their roots. Still a few years away from putting on this kind of show.

And that’s the beauty of it.

Because if you’re patient (which can be challenging at times 😅) if you give it time, those small beginnings will turn into thousands of blooms. It won’t happen overnight, but one day you’ll look out and see rows and rows of something you once just planted with hope.

So no… there’s no such thing as too many peonies. Just a reminder that the best things take time 🌸💐

Midwest Spring brings 80s and sunshine one day, and tornado warnings, downpours, and 60s the next day.

Friday night had us out in the mud, tending to each and every root. Heavy rains meant some had to be completely replanted, while others needed a gentle lift after sinking too deep. Not exactly the glamorous side of flower farming—but part of the story nonetheless.

Fast forward to yesterday’s soft rain and tonight’s little peek at growth… and just like that, the excitement is back. Those tiny signs of life make it all worth it.

We’ve even started penciling out a plan for fall shooting to add 800 more roots. I guess you could say… this first round didn’t scare us off too bad. 😉
