What are the best shoes for babies learning to walk? Actually, Barefoot is Best!

When your toddler is out and about put the shoes* on but when you are home socks and shoes be gone.

Shoes for this stage are for protection from the environment, they are NOT needed for support or muscle development. The natural design of your toddler’s plump, padded feet and flexible toes provide all the support they need for standing and walking!

*For walking outside, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends comfortable, flexible shoes with non-skid soles.

5 Things Every Toddler's Bedtime Routine Should Include:

1. Telling your toddler ahead of time (2-5 mins.) that it will soon be time to start the routine (go upstairs, take a bath, get pjs on, etc- whatever your first step of the routine is) prepares him for the transition.
2. Beginning your bedtime routine at the same time every evening give or take 15 mins. provides structure and predictability- two things that make toddlers feel secure.
3. Choices your Toddler can make (Walk up the steps or crawl up the steps/Thomas pjs or Truck pjs/Dog book or Goodnight Moon book/) will help involve him and foster cooperation.
4. A 20-30 minute time frame. Dragging out the bedtime routine can lead to an overtired toddler and increased resistance.
5. Predictable activities, consistently carried out in the same order each evening. Your toddler should know what comes next and show you!

One of my favorite toys for young babies. I love this colorful, soft, portable one from Sassy! Lay your baby on his back and place the mirror to his side to encourage reaching and rolling. Place your baby on his tummy with the mirror on the floor in front of him to encourage lifting his head and reaching out.

Constant crying, loud screaming, laughing at "nono". Grabbing hair, eye glasses, earrings, everything on the table. Pushing spoon away, throwing food, refusing to eat, spitting food out. Resisting diaper changing, bedtime, baths, leaving an activity. Biting mommy, daddy, playmates; hitting your face. Refusing to let go, refusing to hold hands, running away. Climbing on and jumping from furniture. Playing with the dogfood, water, trash, dog, cat. Pulling everything out, dumping, dropping, throwing!

Bring me your best and we will problem solve positive solutions to the behaviors that baffle you! Find out which behaviors are perfectly normal and typical and how you can positively manage unruly behaviors- at the same time foster self confidence, encourage independence, and nurture a happy baby!

Some Halloween Songs for your LO:

Halloween Song (Tune: The Farmer In The Dell)
Oh, Halloween is here, Oh, Halloween is here, With costumes on we'll walk around, We'll knock on doors all over town, Yes, Halloween is here.

TRICK OR TREAT (Tune: Looby Lou )
Here we go trick-or-treat, here we go trick-or-treat,
Here we come down the street, all on a Halloween Night.
I sneak up on the porch, I knock right on the door.
I fill my sack with lots of treats, and dash away for more.

Five Little Pumpkins Finger Play
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate, (show 5 fingers)
The first one said, (1 finger)
“Oh, my, it’s getting late.” (hands on cheeks)
The second one said, (2 fingers)
“There are witches in the air.” (point up and look up)
The third one said, (3 fingers)
“But we don’t care.” (hands raised in a “don’t care” gesture)
The fourth one said, (4 fingers)
“Let’s run and run and run.” (move arms like you’re running)
The fifth one said, (5 fingers)
“I’m ready for some fun.” (punch up w/both fists)
“Whooo!” went the wind, (move open hands back and forth)
and out went the light, (clap on “out”)
And the five little pumpkins (5 fingers)
rolled out of sight. (roll arms)

Is your baby grabbing for the spoon during meals? Time to give him one of his own! Keep doing what you are doing but let your LO try his hand at it too. It takes lots of practice to learn to spoonfeed efficiently- by 15 mos. most babies are able to spoonfeed by themselves- it's messy but they can do it IF they have had opportuinities to practice. Best meal to let your baby practice spoonfeeding is the one just before bathtime :)

You may want to start gradually adjusting your LO eating, sleeping, activity schedule by a few minutes each day this week to help acclimate to the time change coming this Sunday. Parent patience will go a long way as your LO body clock catches up with the wall clock the week after!

Babies, Books, & Bonding- It is never too early to introduce books to your baby! Best books for 4-6 mos. olds are board books with one simple picture per page. Babies like to look at the pictures briefly (and pat the page), “help” turn the pages (pull & grab the book), “lip read” (chew on the book), and they enjoy listening to you talk about the pictures- often they will look at your face and or vocalize with you! Even 1-2 minutes at a time attending to a book will set the foundation for developing early literacy skills. Our public libraries are full of fun baby books!!

Awwww, a rainy day perfect for creative play! Some ideas:

-Open the pots and pans cabinet and let your lo pull out, nest, mix, and bang
-Give your little one a shopping bag and let them "shop" for toys around the house
-Put some random, safe items (spoon, old phone-battery removed, can from the pantry, small stuffed animal, a few blocks, etc) in a shoe box with a lid and let your lo play his own way
-Make a sheet tent to play in
-Spread a blanket and have an indoor picnic lunch or a "tea" party
-Give your lo a daytime bath and let them play with cups and toys in the bath for a while
-Create a balance beam with duct tape- walk on the line, walk backward, jump over
-Take the cushions off the couch and let babies crawl over

AND for the outdoor enthusiasts- Go outside and march and splash in puddles, collect rain in a bucket or two, toss small rocks in a puddle. Come in dry off, and warm up with a warm drink and a good story book.

I do hope to see you/meet you at the smalltalkers FREE Open Play on Monday, 10/14 from 10-11 am at Wholesome Campus!!
