SANTA FE’S OWN REPRESENTING NM AT THE NATIONALS FUTURE CITIES STEM COMPETITION IN DC, FEB 14-16! WE’D LOVE YOUR SUPPORT!

This past Saturday the annual Future Cities competition was held at the engineering school at the University of New Mexico (UNM). This year’s competition focused on the theme of “farm to table.”
24 teams made of 6th - 8th graders competed and for the second consecutive year the team from Mandela International Magnet School here in Santa Fe took first place and will now be representing the state of New Mexico at the Nationals Competition in Washington, DC February 14-16.

Their winning design integrated forward looking technology, renewable energy systems designed to care for and renew the environment, and regenerative and progressive agricultural methodology. As part of the team’s research and one of the distinguishing parts of their project, the kids visited and met with some prominent and world-class farming institutions in Santa Fe, including Desert Verde aquaponics farm, the Controlled Environment Agriculture program at Santa Fe Community College, Synergia Ranch (creators of Biosphere 2) and Chelenzo Farms.
As the kids put it:

“This project represents months of hard work, late nights, problem-solving, and belief in our ideas about how cities of the future can better serve people and the planet. Advancing to nationals is a twice-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but getting there requires raising $15,000 to cover travel, lodging, materials, and registration costs. We are looking forward to proudly represent New Mexico on the national stage.”

As you may be aware, New Mexico consistently ranks at or near the bottom (50th or 51st, including D.C.) in nationwide education rankings and student proficiency metrics. Sadly, data from 2024 and 2025 indicates the state ranks last in reading and math for 4th and 8th graders.

Thus, as you might imagine this is an amazing opportunity to promote and support STEM education in and from Santa Fe and New Mexico, and to showcase these brilliant young minds and their work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, math, environmental conservation and regenerative farming.

So, the kids would love for you to please consider supporting them and their newsworthy endeavor. Here is the great gofundme page they put together:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support.

AN EXCERPT

Residential pesticide use was the main source of exposure for these children. Although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prohibited CPF for indoor household use in 2001, it continues to be applied in agriculture for non-organic crops such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. This ongoing use results in toxic exposure from outdoor air and dust, particularly near farming areas.

Prenatal exposure to Chlorpyrifos in the womb disrupts brain development. Risks remain for children in farming communities. A recent study has identified a connection between prenatal exposure to the commonly used insecticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) and structural changes in the brain, along with redu

MILKING ALPINE GOAT & KIDS FOR SALE (10 livestock goats total)

We have a year and a half old Alpine goat in milk for sale that gave birth to a healthy buck (male) and doe (female) on April 13.

She is currently nursing them and produces about half a gallon of milk each day.

If you’re interested, please text 646.320.6553.

Alpine goats are noted to live 12-15 years.

Many people enjoy the healthy benefits of drinking raw goat milk and their milk can be made into butter, cheese, soap, ice cream or any other dairy product normally made from cow's milk. They are often used for commercial dairy production, as well as homestead milk goats.

Goats also are a great way to trim weeds and hazardous wildfire prone land because they love to graze on grass, shrubs, juniper and other plants.

We are selling them as we already have three other goats in milk, which collectively produce more than we need.

Note all bucks have been castrated. Does in milk must be purchased with kids, sale negotiable.

All goats were fed hay from our local San Marcos Feed store, greens and such from our organic market garden, organic goat and alfalfa pellets for those in milk, and forage of native plants on our land. We are an organic regenerative farm, so we do not use herbicides or pesticides. More information about our farm can be found at ChelenzoFarms.com
