I frequently receive messages asking about the price of my birds and chicks and sometimes people are not happy with the price and don’t even reply when I give them a price.
The reality is that I am a small farm, not a large scale hatchery or farm store. By the time a pullet reaches point of lay, I have invested months of feed, housing, bedding, supplements, healthcare, NPIP costs, utilities, daily care and countless hours of labor into raising that bird.
I am not going to raise a pullet for months and sell her for $20. The cost of my time, feed, labor, and care is far more than that and in many cases, more than my actual selling price.
What many people also don’t see is the years of work that go into developing and maintaining quality breeding stock. There have been years of money, time, research, selective breeding, culling, adding more quality bloodlines and hard work invested into producing birds that meet my standards. You’re not just paying for a few month old pullet or chick, you’re paying for years of dedication behind the genetics and quality of that bird.
If you’re looking for Tractor Supply prices, then Tractor Supply may be the better option for you. Small farms cannot compete with the pricing of large corporations that buy and/or produce birds in massive quantities.
My birds are priced based on what it actually costs to raise them properly. When you buy from a small farm, you’re paying for quality care, selective breeding, healthy birds, biosecurity and the time and dedication that go into raising them.
I completely understand that my prices may not fit everyone’s budget and that’s okay. But please understand that small farms cannot sustainably raise quality poultry and sell them at farm store prices.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support small farms and local breeders 🐣
