Just days before the signing of the U.S. Constitution in September 1787, George Washington and dozens of fellow delegates gathered at Philadelphia’s City Tavern for a farewell dinner that produced an extraordinary bar tab.

Records from the evening show that 55 guests went through 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, 22 bottles of porter, 12 bottles of b**r, eight bottles of hard c***r, eight bottles of wh***ey and seven bowls of alcoholic punch. In total, that amounted to well over 150 bottles, not including the punch.

The enormous order reflected a much heavier drinking culture than most Americans are accustomed to today. Alcohol was a routine part of meals, social gatherings and political life in the 18th century, with b**r, c***r, w**e, rum and wh***ey widely consumed.

The dinner took place shortly before the Constitutional Convention concluded, but there is no evidence that alcohol influenced the delegates’ decisions or the final wording of the Constitution. Instead, the surviving bill offers a remarkable glimpse into how differently drinking was viewed in the era of the Founding Fathers.
