Herbs and Fishes

Herbs and Fishes Herbs and Fishes is a small-farm and Educational Center that specializes in aquaponics and gardening.

Herbs and Fishes is a micro-farm in the heart of Fort Mill, SC. We specialize in aquaponics, gardening and small farm animals. We want to share what we've learned over the years with others. We hope our farm can be a place where friends can come learn and play, relax and enjoy God's display of beauty in the different seasons and learn about what the typical day of a farmer looks like. Come join us for a day on the farm and enjoy an experience like no other!

Spring is showing off over here at Herbs and Fishes 🌱

We’ve got dill and basil popping up, cherry tomatoes coming in strong, and with all this rain… the mushrooms are making their appearance too! The green beans are doing their thing (and not disappointing), and the strawberries, well, let’s just say we have more than we can handle right now 🍓

If you’ve ever wanted to grow your own strawberries, this is your chance! We’ve got plenty of runners to share.

Send me a message if you’d like some, we’d love to see them growing in more gardens around our community! 💚

One of my favorite things about a pollinator garden is something new is always growing throughout the Spring and Summer. 🐝 🌺 Fortunately here in SC, we can grow a lot still even in the winter, but the summer sure does show off with the pretty flowers! This area has come back year after year since most of what we add are perennials! 🙌

Ever need help with your garden, let me know! I love helping people in this space!

Just a little fact I learned about plums and thought I’d share!

If you’ve ever noticed a white, powdery coating on plums that wipes right off, it’s called the “bloom.” It’s completely natural and serves as a protective layer that helps keep the fruit fresh as it grows.

I couldn’t help but think about how intentional that is. It’s one of those reminders for me that God is in the details. He didn’t just create things to exist, He thought about how they would be sustained.

A simple reminder that nothing is forgotten… even the smallest details are thoughtfully made by the Creator. ☺️

Sharing as this gentleman is local and an expert in aquaponics! I met Sam at a farmers market in Charlotte a decade ago! He was doing cool things in the aquaponics world back then, even more fun to see him in the schools teaching kids now(and I bet grown ups too)! He’s taking applications for other schools to get involved! If you think this is something your school would benefit from, here’s the link!

Roly poly, pill bugs or wood lice; regardless of what you call them, they can be a real pain for your fruit. They thrive in wet darker areas, like under my strawberries plants! If you’re getting holes in your fruit, these little guys may be the problem. Time to do a new set up like the big farms do with a fabric to keep the berries from coming in contact with the dirt.

Little worker hard at it 🐝
This bumblebee is packing pollen into its back legs, tiny baskets that help feed the whole hive. God’s creation is pretty amazing.

From figs to fungus! 😂. Mushrooms are so interesting. These flowerpot fungus’ are growing in our raised beds. They started so small and are huge now within days. The right temps and humidity cause this, but it is harmless to your plants. Be sure to pick them from your yard or garden if you have dogs. It’ll make them sick. Unfortunately, my dog Roscoe is a glutton for punishment and forgets they make him sick every year when I don’t find them in time. He goes out like he’s at a buffet. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤪

My favorite thing about summer (ok, yeah they’re all my favorites, I know 😂) are the figs! Fig jam is coming! These are one of the oldest cultivated foods in history. Archaeological evidence from the Jordan Valley suggests figs were being intentionally grown as early as 9400–9200 BC, making them a cornerstone of early agriculture. I thought this was pretty cool. Hope you do too! If you have never had one, let me know and I’ll be sure to share at harvest! ☺️
