Bear Ass Farm began as a family getaway for the ( Lisa) Carroll-(Adam) Barnett family in 2015. We bought the 20 acre farm in the NC mountains with the intention of providing our four children a small slice of the rural childhood we both enjoyed...swimming in a river, riding bikes down a country road, playing in the woods, spotting wildlife in our yard, and of course, sledding. Anything to get them out of the house and off the electronics, even if just for a few weekends a month.
A funny thing happened once we started spending time up at our farm, though. We both began remembering how it felt to live in the country, to grow and eat our own food, to reuse and re-purpose things instead of throwing them away (believe me, when you have to haul things out to the dump because you're in the middle of nowhere, you become much more aware of the volume of waste you create and REALLY get inspired to shoot for zero waste!)
As we spent more time at the farm, we made small changes in our life. We found ways to be happy with the things we already had. We found uses for items that would have previously been thrown away. We began eating foods that came from the earth and not from a box. We looked for more ways to simplify our life and be good stewards to the land we have been entrusted with.
In 2017, Lisa left her job in direct patient care, and the dream of Bear Ass Farm was born. Armed with two decades of healthcare experience and both a Biology and Chemistry degree. Lisa envisioned a sustainable homestead where well-cared-for animals and intelligently cultivated land coexist in a circle of life, a farm that produced natural products with a sound scientific backing, operating under the principal of sustainability and the goal of zero waste.
