Something simple for your morning coffee.

I enjoy making these little wooden scoops. Each one has its own grain and a little different shape. Something made by hand that you can reach for every day.

Sometimes you have to make something just to make something else.

This piece coming off the lathe isn’t part of the chair. It’s part of a fixture I’m building to help hold the rocker legs while I drill the rung holes.

A little behind-the-scenes work that goes into making these cherry rocking chairs.

Those are test rungs at the end—just checking the fit before moving on.

I know y’all are wondering what I’m doing 😂

Here’s a little look around the shop. Cherry rocker parts, white oak rockers, a walnut cutting board and coasters—and a bed frame for a longtime customer.

Some waiting on parts, some getting closer, and plenty left to do.

Finishing a back-post tenon on the lathe, then checking the fit on a white oak rocking chair.

Those walnut posts are temporary pieces for checking the angles. The finished posts will be white oak.

Little by little, it’s starting to look like a chair.

A chunk of wood, two hands, and a whole lot of shavings.

I carve each bowl individually, working with the grain and letting the shape develop along the way. No two ever come out quite alike—and that’s what I enjoy about making them.

Made to use. Beautiful enough to leave out.

A little shop talk while I soften the sharp edges on these cherry rocking-chair back ribs.

I shape each chamfer by eye with a spokeshave, checking it as I go. It’s a small detail, but it changes how the piece looks and feels.

Square to octagonal, all shaped by eye with a drawknife and spokeshave. I like the character the flat faces give these rocker legs.

Which would you prefer on a rocking chair: round legs or octagonal legs?

A bandsaw gets me close. The knife lets me shape the details by hand.

Wharton Esherick once joked, “I’ll use my teeth if I have to.” I know what he meant—use the tool that gets the wood where you want it.
